Before the light, what the car was showing you
Symptoms have normally been building for a while before the light so much as shows. Late news, in other words:
- less power, particularly climbing uphill
- you find the revs stop short of where they once went
- worse fuel consumption
- the stop/start without a word giving up
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under hard acceleration
None of that is conclusive alone. Next to the light, it is a fair guess the filter is full.
