How the car is handled in the meantime makes a difference too.
- A long even run may even now do it, provided the light is amber and the car goes fine. Costs zero, so have a go at that before ringing.
- A drive will not shift it now — limp mode means that window has already gone.
- A diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under the throttle, is the moment to stop booking long drives and book it in.
Signs the motor has been showing you
By the time the light appears, things have generally been deteriorating for some time. It is last news:
- falling off on power, particularly uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as before
- fuel use turning worse
- a stop/start that has meekly packed in
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not proof. The light beside them indicates a loaded filter.
Clogged diesel particulate filters round Ware, and the why
For a DPF, the poorest motoring is the kind you get around a rural hamlet such as Ware. Two things more worth noting. Getting the filter hollowed out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is exchanged, your existing filter is cleared in place and put back into use.
