Walrow, Somerset: Mobile DPF Cleaning

Sorting the DPF is done at the motor, not at a body shop. The fitter turns up at your address over in Walrow and starts. The diesel particulate filter is treated fitted to the car, a DPF regeneration comes next, and you end up with the filter you came with.

Budget for the visit lasting typically around 2 hours. The clean begins from £299, settled by the phone before anyone leaves.

The light is on already and the vehicle is low on power — that is how we normally meet people, and roughly what this page deals with.

What to check when the DPF light shows

Not the DPF, automatically. Opening thing to note. That light can come from several faults, not only one, so the visit begins with a diagnostic and not with a clean.

How the car is driven in the meantime counts too.

  • Amber light, motor still driving as normal — a long constant run can still sort it alone. Costs zero, and worth a try before you ring anything.
  • Vehicle already fallen into limp mode — that window has gone. A drive will not reach it now.
  • Stop planning long drives and get it looked at if the interior stinks of diesel or there is black smoke when you pull away.

Before the light, what the vehicle was showing you

Late news, the light. The symptoms generally mount for weeks before it arrives:

  • less power, above all pulling uphill
  • you find the revs fall short of where they once went
  • the fuel consumption is worse
  • the stop/start without a word packing in
  • diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox

By itself, none of that is conclusive. The light with them indicates a blocked filter.

Why diesel particulate filters clog round Walrow

Being a coastal area, Walrow generates precisely the use a DPF manages the poorest. The school run to Churchfield Church School, Pillmore Lane at a standstill at the morning rush, a few minutes to Aldi, the dash to Highbridge & Burnham — none of it goes on long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration. What should burn off stays put.

Neither is distant from Walrow: under a mile to the M5, under 15 miles to Wells. Neither is on the way to anything most weeks, though, so the drive that would clear a filter never happens.

Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration stops

The motor is looking after itself, which is what limp mode means. The entire difficulty is that a proper drive works by triggering a regeneration, and once in limp mode the revs will not climb and power is held down.

So the standard advice to get it up the motorway is sound advice, right until it stops being. The filter wants cleaning rather than road work once the vehicle has slipped into limp mode.

The filter does not leave it. That is the bit most drivers do not expect: the job is done with the DPF even now bolted to the motor, on your front, in a work car park, anywhere the vehicle can sit for a while.

The ECU is interrogated first, reporting soot load by proportion and by actual weight, along with a look over of sensor readings, glow plugs and associated parts, so nothing is cleaned while another fault is still in play.

Then the treatment. A cleaning fluid is fed in through the entry point on that vehicle and expands inside the filter, loosening the soot and ash a regeneration on its own will never move. Sometimes a filter is clogged enough to require doing twice.

Next, a regeneration drives off everything the clean loosened. That is a monitored drive out of Walrow if you are present, or a static regeneration where the vehicle stands, with the real-time data checked once done.

Then a second diagnostic, proving the change, putting out the warning light and logging anything still logged. Both sets of figures are emailed, so the before and after figures are on record.

The failures a DPF clean cannot cure

Only one fault is cured by cleaning: the filter choked with ash and soot. It does little for:

  • the wrong signal from a pressure or temperature sensor
  • the EGR valve jammed open
  • a fault in the AdBlue system
  • faulty glow plugs or injectors, so never a regeneration ever runs
  • a turbo passing oil through the filter

Finding that out is the first diagnostic's purpose. You are let know before any work gets going, not after you have settled up, if it turns out to be one of those.

DPF renewal is what people type in, but no part is replaced: the filter you own is cleared where it sits and sent back into service. Nor is having it gutted a solution, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes illegal. Two more things worth bearing in mind.

Figures for DPF cleaning in Walrow

The cleaning opens from £299. A call-out charge applies to every visit, and pays for the call-out itself, the booking, the check and the advice that comes with it.

Not one flat rate would be straight, so the number is agreed over the phone once we are told the vehicle and what the filter is likely to need. The place you are tells as much as what you own: Walrow itself, Edithmead nearby, or otherwise out across the TA postcode area.

Treatment that will not do it is not cleaning you pay for, and the scan is what says so. You nonetheless pay that charge: someone turned up, did the diagnostic and passed on you the advice.

Aftercare is included by a 30-day warranty: should the light reappear within it, an engineer heads back to Walrow.

Where we travel around Walrow, and what we clean

The filter is done where it sits on all of them: private cars, vans of any size and light commercials, HGVs, plant machinery, agricultural machinery. Nothing is taken anywhere.

Walrow is seldom a special trip: technicians are out on Pillmore Lane most weeks, and the same run takes in Edithmead, Bason Bridge and the spots out past Watchfield. Call anyway from further out through Somerset. Coverage runs UK-wide, and the day you are offered hangs on the schedule rather than how far away you are.

Things Walrow drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Will a long drive sort it?
Early enough, and with the vehicle out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. A long run at motorway speed is what it needs — not five minutes flat to Aldi and back.
Does the visit take long?
That is typically around 2 hours, though a heavily clogged filter can take cleaning twice, which adds time.
What does it cost in Walrow?
It opens from £299, plus the call-out charge taking in the visit, the scan and the advice. Both the vehicle and where you are change it, which is why quoting is done by phone.
Have I have to be present?
The car requires a place for two hours or so. Nobody expects you to be in it. The regeneration can be done as a monitored drive if you would rather come along.
Can someone travel to Walrow soon?
That comes down to the diary, but it is often same-day or next-day. Call 0303 330 1830 and we will say to you what is free across the TA area.
Does the filter come off the motor?
It is treated where it sits, on the mobile service. Getting a filter off or putting one back on amount to anything something we do whichever way.
The light comes back — then what?
An engineer travels back out to Walrow — the 30-day warranty takes in aftercare.
