It might not be the DPF at all. That is the opening thing. A diagnostic comes before the cleaning, because that same dash light has several possible faults behind it.
Second thing: how you handle it between now and then matters.
- Car even now driving fine on an amber light — attempt a long even run first. It costs nothing at all and often clears the filter without a visit.
- Once the vehicle is in limp mode, driving will not touch it. The window has shut.
- Get it looked at rather than driving it — diesel in the interior, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone well past the long-run stage.
Signs the motor has been sending you
The light is last news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have usually been building for a while:
- less power, above all going uphill
- revs that will not pull the way they always did
- economy that is worse than it used to be
- stop/start silently packing in
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
On its own, none of that is conclusive. It is a fair guess the filter is loaded once the light is on as well.
