First thing: it is not automatically the DPF. A diagnostic goes before any cleaning, because that same dash light has several possible faults behind it.

- Amber light, car yet driving fine — a long steady run can still shift it on its own. Costs nothing at all, and worth a try before you call anything.
- A drive will not touch it now — limp mode means that window has now gone.

Signs the motor has been giving you
The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have normally been mounting for a while:
- power falling off, above all going uphill
- you notice the revs never reach where they used to go
- fuel use that is worse than it used to be
- a stop/start that has quietly packed in
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the box
None of that is evidence alone. Alongside the light alongside them, the filter is a fair bet.
Why diesel particulate filters clog round Vauxhall
