The unit is not necessarily what is wrong, and that leads. That light can come from several faults, not only one, so the visit begins with a check and not with a clean.
Second thing: how you drive it between now and then matters.
- Amber light, motor still driving fine — a long steady run can still shift it by itself. Costs nothing at all, and worth trying before you ring anything.
- Once the car is in limp mode, motoring will not shift it. The window has gone.
- Diesel smell in the interior, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop booking long drives and get it checked.
The vehicle has been telling you already
The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have generally been mounting for weeks:
- power tailing off, above all climbing uphill
- revs that will not rise the way they always did
- the fuel use is poorer
- a stop/start that has silently packed in
- the interior smelling of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
Alone, none of that is conclusive. Next to the light alongside them, the filter is a fair guess.
Why diesel particulate filters block near Upton
