United Downs, Cornwall: Mobile DPF Cleaning
Mobile DPF cleaning comes to the vehicle. An engineer turns up at your place across United Downs, clears the diesel particulate filter while it is fitted to the motor, runs a DPF regeneration, and you end up with the filter you started with.
You'll know a number by phone before anyone departs, the clean starting from £299, and the visit taking typically around 2 hours.
If the light is showing and the car is down on power, this page is the right one. That is how most people end up here.
What to check when the DPF light is on
First thing: it is not necessarily the unit. Cleaning is not where a visit starts. A check is — several faults show up as the same signal.
The motoring you do in the meantime matters. That is the next thing.
- Worth a shot before you book anything: amber light, motor driving normally, just one constant run, no outlay.
- Car already dropped into limp mode — that window has shut. A drive will not shift it now.
- Get it looked at rather than driving it — diesel in the car, or smoke on the throttle, has gone well past the long-run stage.
Signs the motor has been showing you
Last news, the light. The symptoms usually grow for a while before it shows:
- pulling uphill, the power tails off
- you see the revs fall short of where they once went
- the fuel consumption is down
- the stop/start without a word bowing out
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
Any one of those, taken singly, is not conclusive. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is blocked.
The explanation diesel particulate filters choke round United Downs
For a DPF, the poorest use is the type you get across a small village such as United Downs. None of it runs long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration: the school run to St Day and Carharrack Community School, Consols Road standing at half eight, ten minutes to Costcutter, the dash to Perranwell. Soot that should clear collects instead.
The M5 stands over 50 miles from United Downs, Truro under 10 miles out, and unless something takes you out that way often, whole weeks go by without the sustained run that scours a DPF. Geography does not help.
The point a DPF regeneration can no longer happen
What limp mode amounts to is the car protecting itself. The entire difficulty is that a sustained drive works by starting a regeneration, and under limp mode the revs will not pull and power is capped.
Taking it up the motorway is the usual advice, and it works up to a line. Once the car is in limp mode you are past that line, and the filter wants cleaning rather than road work.
Mobile DPF cleaning where the vehicle stands across United Downs
Nothing is taken from the car. That throws people. The DPF sits bolted where it is and the work is done around it, on a forecourt, in a works car park, any place it can stand for two hours or so.
First a diagnostic. Live ECU data, the soot load as a percent and as a weight, the sensor feeds, the glow plugs, the related hardware — all of it taken before a thing is started.
Then the clean. A cleaning solution goes in through the entry point on that car and expands inside the filter, lifting the soot and ash a regeneration on its own will never budge. Badly clogged filters sometimes need a second pass.
Then a regeneration, to burn off what the clean has loosened. Stay with the car and it is done as a monitored drive out of United Downs. Drop it and the regeneration runs in place, with live data checked once it is done.
Both reports go over by email, so the figures from either end are recorded. The second scan is what proves the change, puts out the light and logs whatever is still showing.
Where treatment is not the solution
A filter clogged with soot and ash is the one thing cleaning answers. It will not help:
- temperature or pressure sensors flagging a blockage that is not there
- EGR valves that jam open
- the AdBlue system going wrong
- injectors or glow plugs that block a regeneration starting whatsoever
- a turbo passing oil through the filter
The first check is there for just that. When it proves to be one of those, you are let know before any work gets going rather than after you have paid a penny.
Two more worth knowing. Having the filter gutted is not a remedy — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your original filter is cleared in place and returned into use.
The figure for DPF cleaning across United Downs
A call-out charge stands whatever the outcome, and pays for the visit, the booking fee, the check and the advice given. Treatment itself opens from £299.
Publishing a flat rate would not be straight. We agree it on the phone, once the vehicle and its likely needs are known. The car moves it, and so does the address — United Downs, Goon Gumpas, or a spot further out in the TR postcode area.
If the check counts cleaning out, there is nothing to pay for it. What still holds is the call-out charge, since the visit took place, the scan was done and the advice was given.
Aftercare is included by a 30-day warranty: should the light return within it, an engineer comes back to United Downs.
Excellent service came to my home address was polite and explained the process then got on with the job.
The engineer came next day on time and did a full diagnosis. In the end he said my DPF was only 20% full so did not require the DPF clean. I paid for the call out only so they are honest people. Would definitely recommend this company without hesitation.
Excellent service, good lad and very helpful and very pleasant too. Very good rates, in fact a lot cheaper than taking it locally and these come out to you.
The vehicles we clean and the patch we cover near United Downs
Whatever it is — car, panel van, light commercial, lorry, plant, construction machinery, farm vehicle — the very same call-out service stands, and the filter never leaves it.
Engineers are along Consols Road most weeks, so United Downs is hardly ever a special trip, and the same run covers Goon Gumpas, Hale Mills and the spots out past Crofthandy. It is the schedule, not the distance, that picks whether it is today or tomorrow, and coverage reaches UK-wide — so phone still from even further out around Cornwall.

Things United Downs drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Does a long run sort it?
- Soon enough, and with the vehicle out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. It wants a steady run at motorway speed, not ten minutes or so to Costcutter and back.
- Does the visit take long?
- That is typically around 2 hours, though a badly clogged filter can require cleaning twice, which takes longer.
- In United Downs, what does it cost?
- It begins from £299, plus the call-out charge covering the visit, the scan and the advice. The vehicle and your address both change the figure, so we quote on the phone.
- Must I be there in person?
- No. The motor wants a spot to sit for a couple of hours; nobody expects you to stand with it. If you would rather come along, the regeneration can be carried out as a supervised drive instead.
- Can someone travel to United Downs soon?
- Depending on the calendar, often same-day or next-day is normal. Ring 0303 330 1830 what is open across the TR area.
- Is the filter taken off the motor?
- It is cleaned where it stands, on the on-site service. We do not lift filters off or bolt them back on, in either direction.
- The light reappears — then what?
- The 30-day warranty takes in aftercare, including an engineer coming back to United Downs.
