Underdown, Devon: Mobile DPF Cleaning

With on-site DPF cleaning, we drive out to the car. No body shop, no filter leaving. A fitter travels to your address over in Underdown, treats the diesel particulate filter as it sits, carries out a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you arrived with.

Nobody sets off until the number is settled over the phone. The visit lasts typically around 2 hours and the clean begins from £299.

Written for the position most owners are in: the light showing, the vehicle short for power, and the clean still to fix.

The DPF light is on. What then?

The unit is not necessarily what is wrong, and that goes first. A number of faults put the very same light on the very same dash, which is why a visit starts with a diagnostic rather than with cleaning.

Second thing: how you run it between now and then counts.

  • Amber light, car even now driving fine — a long constant run can yet shift it alone. Costs nothing, and worth a try before you ring anything.
  • That window has gone once the car has slipped into limp mode. Motoring will not get there now.
  • Diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop arranging long drives and get it checked.

Signs the vehicle has been sending you

By the time the light shows, things have generally been slipping for some time. It is belated news:

  • going uphill, the power tails off
  • you notice the revs stop short of where they used to go
  • fuel use that is worse than before
  • stop/start silently bowing out
  • smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car

That is not conclusive on its own. The light alongside them points at a full filter.

Why diesel particulate filters choke near Underdown

For a DPF, the worst motoring is the kind you meet in a small village such as Underdown. A regeneration wants time and heat, and sees not much: not on the school run to Kenn Church of England Primary School, not on Webberton Lane at the morning rush, not on a few minutes to Lidl, and not on the dash to Marsh Barton. What should clear stays put.

Geography does not assist either. The M5 is under 3 miles from Underdown and Exeter is under 5 miles away, so unless something pulls you out that way often, weeks go by without the long unbroken run that would empty the filter on its own.

DPF regeneration, and the stage limp mode ends it

It is self-preservation: that is all limp mode means. A long drive works by starting a regeneration, and that is precisely what limp mode blocks: power held down, revs kept low, no regeneration available.

Getting it up the motorway is the standard advice, and it stands up to a point. Beyond that line — limp mode — more driving will not manage it, and the filter wants cleaning.

The filter does not leave it. That is the bit most owners do not see coming: the job takes place with the DPF yet bolted to the vehicle, on your drive, in a work car park, wherever the car can stand for a while.

First a check. Running ECU data, the soot load as a percent and as a weight, the sensor readings, the glow plugs, the connected hardware — all of it read before any of it is started.

A cleaning solution then goes in through the access point on that motor, opening out inside the filter to free soot and ash a regeneration alone will never shift. Severely loaded filters sometimes take a second pass.

What the clean has freed is then cleared by a regeneration. If you are there, that is run as a monitored drive out of Underdown; if not, on the spot where the motor sits, with the real-time data checked after.

A second diagnostic confirms the change, clears the warning light and lists anything still open. Both read-outs are sent over, so you end up with the before and after figures on record.

When a DPF clean is not the fix

Cleaning answers one thing: a filter blocked with soot and ash. It does no good for:

  • a temperature or pressure sensor flagging a block that is not there
  • a stuck-open EGR valve
  • AdBlue system problems
  • injectors or glow plugs that prevent a regeneration completing in the first place
  • a turbo putting oil through the filter

Finding that out is the first scan's purpose. Proving to be one of them means hearing it before the work starts, not after settling up a penny.

DPF renewal is what people type in, but no part is exchanged: the filter you own is cleaned where it sits and returned to use. Nor is having it hollowed out a remedy, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes an offence. Two more things worth bearing in mind.

The figure of DPF cleaning across Underdown

Cleaning opens from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it covers the call-out, the booking, the diagnostics and the advice.

Once we are told what you drive, and roughly what the filter will take, the price gets agreed over phone. A single price for every job would not be truthful. The vehicle changes it, and so does the postcode — Underdown, Kennford, or a spot farther out in the EX postcode area.

Treatment that will not help is not treatment you pay for, and the diagnostic is what says so. Because the visit, the check and the advice have happened, the call-out charge nonetheless applies.

A 30-day warranty covers aftercare on the clean, and that includes an engineer coming back out to Underdown if the light reappears inside the window.

CHECKED THE CAR OVER FOR DPF FOUND A LOT OF SOOT IN FILTER. CLEARED THE FILTER CAR DRIVES A LOT BETTER. WORTH CHECKING.

TONY B.

Really good service. Everything explained clearly. Pointed out some other engine issues to check out which was very helpful. Expensive compared to other companies but with the 28 day warranty I felt happy to pay to get the best service. Couldn't fault the engineer he was excellent.

Siobhan P.

Nic came out and fixed my dpf and emissions light, did a fantastic job my car is now running full speed again after going into limp mode.

What we clean, and how far we travel round Underdown

The filter is treated on the vehicle on all of them: cars and estates, vans of any size and light commercials, HGVs, plant machinery, farm vehicles. Nothing is taken anywhere.

Engineers are along Webberton Lane most weeks, so Underdown is rarely a detour, and the same run picks up Kennford, Shillingford St George and the spots out past Dunchideock. Even further out around Devon is nonetheless worth ringing about — coverage reaches UK-wide, and it is the diary rather than the distance that settles between one day and the next.

Things Underdown drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Can I just take it for a long drive?
It might, provided you catch it early enough and limp mode has not set in. Fifteen minutes to Lidl and back will not do it; motorway speed, held for some time, will.
Does the visit run long?
It is typically around 2 hours. A heavily clogged filter can take a second clean, which extends that.
The cost in Underdown — what is it?
The call-out charge covers the visit, the check and the advice; cleaning itself opens from £299. We settle it on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both move the price.
Have I got to be around?
You need not stand with it — the car only requires space to wait for a couple of hours. If you would rather come along, the regeneration can be run as a supervised drive instead.
How soon can someone get to Underdown?
Depending on the diary, often same-day or next-day is typical. Ring 0303 330 1830 and we will let you what is free across the EX area.
The filter — does it come off the vehicle?
Cleaned where it sits, on this service, so no. That work — a filter off, a filter back on — is not work we do.
Suppose the light returns?
Included by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer coming back to Underdown.
