- power tailing off, especially pulling uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as before
- the fuel consumption is worse
- a stop/start that has meekly given up
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under acceleration
On its own, none of that is conclusive. The light alongside them indicates a full filter.
