The light is belated news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have generally been building for weeks:
- less power, above all climbing uphill
- revs that will not climb the way they once did
- worse fuel use
- the stop/start silently bowing out
- the car smelling of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
That is not conclusive by itself. Alongside the light with them, the filter is a fair assumption.
