The car has been warning you already
The light is late news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have normally been growing for weeks:
- falling off on power, above all uphill
- you notice the revs fall short of where they always went
- fuel economy turning worse
- a stop/start that has meekly bowed out
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under the throttle
That is not proof by itself. The light beside them suggests a full filter.
