Before the light, what the motor was telling you
Last news, the light. The symptoms generally build for some time before it shows:
- less power, especially climbing uphill
- the revs no longer climb the way they once did
- fuel use that is worse than it used to be
- a stop/start that has meekly packed in
- the cabin smelling of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
By itself, none of that is evidence. Alongside the light, it is a fair guess the filter is blocked.
What chokes diesel particulate filters around Trevalga
The driving that goes with a rural hamlet like Trevalga is the poorest sort for a DPF. A regeneration needs time and heat, and gets not much: not on the school run to Boscastle Community Primary School, not on Under Road at half past eight, not on a few minutes to Spar, and not on the dash to the nearest station. The soot banks up rather than burning away.

What a DPF clean will not fix
Only one fault is answered by a clean: the filter clogged with ash and soot. It does nothing for:
- a pressure or temperature sensor reporting a blockage that is not there
- EGR valves that hang open
- the AdBlue system failing
- glow plugs or injectors blocking the regeneration running whatsoever
- turbo failure, with oil reaching the filter
Finding that out is the first diagnostic's whole job. Where it is found to be one of those, you are told before any work starts rather than after you have handed over for it.
Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter gutted fails its MOT, and driving it is against the law, so that is no solution. What gets searched for as DPF renewal replaces nothing: your filter is treated in place and goes back into work.
