The light is belated news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have usually been mounting for some time:
- less power, above all going uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb as they should

- silently, the stop/start packs in
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under hard acceleration
Alone, none of that is conclusive. It is a fair guess the filter is blocked once the light is showing too.
