The DPF light is on. What now?
First thing: it is not always the DPF. Treatment is not where a visit opens. A check is — a number of faults register as the same warning.
How the car is run in the meantime counts too.
- Amber light, motor yet driving fine — a long constant run can yet shift it alone. Costs nothing, and worth trying before you ring anything.
- That window has shut once the vehicle has fallen into limp mode. Motoring will not help now.
- Get it seen to rather than driving it — diesel in the interior, or smoke on acceleration, has gone past the long-run stage.
The motor has been showing you already
By the time the light appears, things have normally been slipping for some time. It is belated news:
- less power, especially pulling uphill
- the revs no longer pull the way they once did
- worse fuel economy
- the stop/start quietly giving up
- the cabin reeking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not conclusive. It is a fair bet the filter is loaded once the light is there too.
Why diesel particulate filters block round Tresawsen
Being a small village, Tresawsen throws up exactly the motoring a DPF copes with the poorest. The school run to Shortlanesend School, B3288 at a halt at half eight, ten minutes to Spar, the hop to Truro — none of it goes on long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration. The soot builds up rather than burning away.
Geography does not oblige either. The M5 is over 50 miles from Tresawsen and Truro is under 5 miles away, so unless something takes you out that way regularly, entire weeks go by without the sustained run that could scour the filter by itself.
Why limp mode stops a DPF regeneration
What limp mode comes down to is the vehicle defending itself. The real difficulty is that a proper drive works by starting a regeneration, and in limp mode the revs will not rise and power is limited.
Running it up the motorway is the usual advice, and it works as far as a limit. Once the vehicle is in limp mode you are beyond that point, and the filter requires a clean rather than driving.

The ECU is taken first, giving soot load by percentage and by weight, along with a review of sensor feeds, glow plugs and connected components, so nothing is cleaned while another fault is still possible.
Soot and ash that a regeneration by itself will never move are loosened after that, by a solution put through the access point on that car, which spreads inside the filter. Sometimes a filter is clogged enough to require doing twice.

Where a clean is not the solution

- the wrong reading from a temperature or pressure sensor
- an EGR valve jammed open
- a failure in the AdBlue system
- glow plugs or injectors blocking the regeneration running at all
- turbo problems, with oil reaching the filter
That is what the first check is for. Where one of those proves the fault, you learn of it up front rather than once the money has gone altogether.
Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter cut out cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is against the law, so that is no fix. What gets searched for as DPF renewal replaces nothing: your existing filter is cleared in place and goes back into service.
