What to check when the DPF light shows
It might not be the unit in the end. That is the opening thing. A diagnostic comes before the cleaning, because that same panel light has a number of possible faults behind it.
It matters what you manage with the vehicle between now and the visit.
- Car even now driving as normal on an amber light — have a go at a long constant run first. It costs nothing and often clears the filter without assistance.
- Once the motor is in limp mode, a long run will not reach it. The window has closed.
- Diesel smell in the cabin, or black smoke under the throttle — stop planning long drives and get it seen to.
Signs the car has been giving you
Symptoms have normally been building for some time before the light even arrives. Belated news, in other words:
- falling off on power, above all uphill
- the revs no longer pull the way they used to
- consumption that is worse than it was
- the stop/start silently bowing out
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under hard acceleration
By itself, none of that is evidence. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is full.
The reason diesel particulate filters block near Trereife
Trereife is a rural hamlet, and the motoring that belongs to one is the poorest sort for a DPF. A regeneration wants the time and heat, and gets none: not on the school run to Newlyn School, not on B3317 at half eight, not on a few minutes to The Co-operative Food, and not on the hop to Penzance. Limp mode is the motor defending itself. Pulling power is held down, the revs will not pull, and the regeneration the filter requires can not run — which is the real problem, because a proper drive works by starting that regeneration.
Sensible advice, that motorway run — right up until the point it is not. The filter requires treatment rather than road work once the vehicle has dropped into limp mode.

Most drivers do not anticipate this part: the filter stays on. The job happens with the DPF still bolted to the car — on your driveway, in a work car park, anywhere the vehicle can wait for a couple of hours.
Nothing is touched until other faults are ruled out. That involves a scan first: live data off the ECU, soot load by percent and by weight, and a look over of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and related hardware.

- the turbo putting oil into the filter

Lastly, two things. A vehicle with the filter cut out fails its MOT, and driving it is an offence, so that is no solution. What gets searched for as DPF renewal swaps nothing: your own filter is treated in place and goes back into work.
