- Get it seen to rather than driving it — diesel in the car, or smoke on acceleration, has gone beyond the long-run stage.
What the car has been showing you
Symptoms have usually been mounting for weeks before the light ever appears. Belated news, in other words:
- less power, above all pulling uphill
- revs that will not climb the way they once did
- worse fuel use
- a stop/start that has quietly packed in
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under hard acceleration
That is not conclusive alone. It is a fair bet the filter is blocked once the light is there too.

For a DPF, the poorest use is the sort you meet in a rural hamlet such as Trelill. Hollowing the filter out is not a fix: without a serviceable DPF a vehicle fails its MOT, and driving it is illegal. DPF renewal is the term people search for, though nothing is replaced — your original filter is cleaned in place and sent back into use. Two more worth noting.
