What the car has been warning you
The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have usually been mounting for weeks:
- less power, above all going uphill
- the revs no longer climb the way they once did
- worse fuel economy
- a stop/start that has silently given up
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under the throttle
None of that is evidence alone. It is a fair bet the filter is full once the light is there too.
