- power tailing off, particularly going uphill
- the revs no longer climb the way they always did
- fuel use that is worse than it was
- the stop/start quietly giving up
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
None of that is conclusive alone. Alongside the light alongside them, the filter is a fair assumption.

Finding that out is the first diagnostic's whole job. Transpiring to be one of them means finding out it before the work begins, not after settling up a penny.
A couple more worth noting. Having the filter hollowed out is not a solution — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your existing filter is cleared in place and put back into use.
