Townhead, Dumfries and Galloway: Mobile DPF Cleaning

On-site DPF cleaning travels to the car. The engineer turns up at your place across Townhead and starts. The diesel particulate filter is cleared on the vehicle, a DPF regeneration follows, and you keep the filter you came with.

You'll know a price by phone before anyone leaves, the clean opening from £299, and the visit lasting typically around 2 hours.

Written for the situation most drivers are in: the light on already, the motor struggling for power, and the clean still to arrange.

What to try when the DPF light shows

Not the filter, necessarily. Main thing to get straight. That light can arise from plenty of faults, not only one, so the visit opens with a check and not with a clean.

It counts what you do with the car between now and the booking.

  • Amber light, car still driving normally — a long steady run can even now clear it by itself. Costs zero, and worth attempting before you book anything.
  • A drive will not reach it now — limp mode means that window has now closed.
  • Get it checked rather than running it — diesel in the cabin, or smoke on acceleration, has gone well past the long-run stage.

Signs the motor has been showing you

The light is last news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have generally been mounting for some time:

  • dropping away on power, above all uphill
  • revs that will not rise the way they used to
  • worse fuel economy
  • the stop/start quietly giving up
  • smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in there

None of that is proof by itself. It is a fair bet the filter is blocked once the light is showing too.

What blocks diesel particulate filters around Townhead

For a DPF, the poorest driving is the type you meet around a residential suburb such as Townhead. Look at a typical week: the local primary school and home, Townhead Street at a standstill before nine, a quick trip to Spar, a run to Sanquhar. Nothing there runs long enough or is hot enough to complete a regeneration. The unburnt soot builds up rather than burning away.

The map does not help either. The A74(M) is under 15 miles from Townhead and Carlisle is under 50 miles away, so unless something takes you out that way routinely, weeks pass without the long unbroken run that would empty the filter on its own.

The moment a DPF regeneration can no longer happen

It is self-defence: that is all limp mode means. The whole problem is that a proper drive works by triggering a regeneration, and in limp mode the revs will not rise and power is capped.

The standard advice — run it up the motorway — is sensible, right until it is not. Once the vehicle is in limp mode you are beyond that point, and the filter wants cleaning rather than driving.

Where the motor stands is where the DPF is treated across Townhead

Nothing comes off the vehicle. That surprises people. The DPF sits fixed where it is and the work goes on around it, on a driveway, in a works car park, wherever it can sit for a few hours.

Nothing is touched until other faults are eliminated. That requires a diagnostic first: running data off the ECU, soot load by percentage and by actual weight, and a review of the sensors, glow plugs and connected components.

Soot and ash that a regeneration on its own will never move are freed after that, by a solution put through the access port on that car, which expands inside the filter. Heavily clogged filters sometimes need a second pass.

A regeneration is next, burning off what the clean has loosened. If you are there, that is carried out as a monitored drive out of Townhead; if not, on the spot where the car stands, with the live data read afterwards.

A second scan proves the change, puts out the warning light and notes anything still outstanding. Both sets of figures are sent over, so you end up with the before and after figures to hand.

When a DPF clean is not the solution

A filter blocked with soot and ash is the one thing cleaning fixes. It will not reach:

  • the wrong figure from a pressure or temperature sensor
  • EGR valves that hang open
  • an AdBlue system failure
  • injectors or glow plugs that block a regeneration running at all
  • a turbo pushing oil through the filter

The first check is there for exactly that. When one of those proves the fault, you find out about it up front rather than once the money has gone already.

Gutting the filter out is not a remedy: without a functioning DPF a vehicle cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is an offence. DPF renewal is the phrase people look up, though nothing is swapped — your existing filter is treated in place and sent back into use. Two more worth knowing.

The figure for DPF cleaning around Townhead

Treatment starts from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it covers the call-out, the booking, the diagnostics and the advice.

No single flat rate would be straight, so the figure is settled by the phone once we have the vehicle and what the filter is apt to need. Two things shift it: what you own, and where you are — Townhead itself, out at Thornhill, or otherwise out within the DG postcode area.

A clean that will not help is not treatment you pay for, and the check is what says so. You still pay that charge: someone travelled, ran the check and offered you the advice.

If the light reappears inside that window, an engineer heads back out to Townhead — the work includes a 30-day warranty taking in aftercare.

DPF cleaning carried out at a vehicle in Townhead

Booked just randomly offline but have to say they are very good and professional all from the call to Tom who did my car very knowledgeable and friendly guy full of advice and friendly and got my car to perfect condition. Much appreciated.

Joe H.

The whole operation was carried out by their operator Nic in an efficient and professional manner. He talked me through the whole process in layman's terms with a full report on completion. The test run showed that the car was, indeed, back to normal. Would definitely recommend.

Graham P.

Polite prompt service and explained everything at each stage and other issues that cropped up during the clean out. Running very well and am very pleased with the service.

What we clean, and how far we travel round Townhead

The filter is cleaned on the vehicle on all of them: cars, vans and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, construction and plant machinery, farm vehicles. Nothing is taken anywhere.

Technicians are along Townhead Street week in week out, so Townhead is rarely a special trip, and the same run takes in Thornhill, Cample and the spots out past Carronbridge. Even further out through Dumfries and Galloway is still worth ringing about — coverage runs UK-wide, and it is the schedule rather than the distance that settles between today and tomorrow.

Things Townhead drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Is a long drive enough on its own?
Early enough, and with the car out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. Fifteen minutes to Spar and back will not be enough; motorway speed, kept for a stretch, will.
Roughly how long does it run?
Count on typically around 2 hours, with a second clean adding to that where the filter is severely clogged.
What does it run to across Townhead?
It begins from £299, plus the call-out charge taking in the visit, the diagnostic and the advice. We settle it on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both move the figure.
Is it needed for me to be there?
No. The motor requires somewhere to wait for a couple of hours; you need not stand with it. If you would prefer to come along, the regeneration can be run as a monitored drive instead.
When can someone come to Townhead?
You are looking at often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is now in the diary. Phone 0303 330 1830 what is free across the DG area.
Does the filter come away from the motor?
On the mobile service, no: the filter is treated in place. We do not get filters off or bolt them back on, either way.
And if the light returns?
The 30-day warranty takes in aftercare, including an engineer heading back to Townhead.
