Second thing: how you run it between now and then matters.
- Motor yet driving as normal on an amber light — have a go at a long steady run first. It costs nothing at all and frequently clears the filter without help.
- A drive will not shift it now — limp mode means that window has already gone.
- Get it checked rather than using it — diesel in the interior, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone beyond the long-run stage.
Before the light, what the vehicle was showing you
The light is late news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have usually been growing for weeks:
- dropping away on power, above all uphill
- an engine whose revs will not rise as they should
- fuel use that is worse than it used to be
- a stop/start that has silently packed in
- the interior smelling of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not evidence. Alongside the light, it is a fair bet the filter is loaded.
Why diesel particulate filters block round Torroy
Being a rural hamlet, Torroy throws up exactly the use a DPF copes with least well. Think about a normal week: the local primary school and back, Linsidemore Loop Road at a crawl before the hour, a quick trip to the local shops, a dash to Invershin. Nothing there runs long enough or is hot enough to see through a regeneration. What should clear stays behind.

Why limp mode prevents a DPF regeneration
What limp mode means is the car defending itself. The entire difficulty is that a proper drive works by setting off a regeneration, and under limp mode the revs will not rise and power is held down.
Taking it up the motorway is the common advice, and it works up to a limit. The filter wants a clean rather than more driving once the motor has dropped into limp mode.

- the turbo putting oil into the filter
Finding that out is the first scan's whole job. You are told before the work starts, not after you have settled up, should it turns out to be one of those.
Hollowing the filter out is not a remedy: without a serviceable DPF a vehicle cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is against the law. DPF renewal is the term people look up, though nothing is replaced — your original filter is cleared in place and put back into use. Two more worth noting.
