Before the light, what the car was warning you
By the time the light arrives, things have normally been slipping for a while. It is belated news:
- power falling off, particularly pulling uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb as they should
- the fuel economy is worse
- a stop/start that has silently bowed out
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
By itself, none of that is evidence. Alongside the light beside them, the filter is a fair assumption.

For a DPF, the least kind use is the type you meet across a rural village such as Three Tees. Two things more worth knowing. Leaving the filter gutted is not a remedy — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your original filter is cleared in place and put back into use.
