What the car has been telling you
By the time the light appears, things have usually been going wrong for a while. It is late news:
- tailing off on power, particularly uphill
- revs that will not pull the way they always did
- fuel economy getting worse
- a stop/start that has silently packed in
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under the throttle
By itself, none of that is conclusive. Next to the light, it is a fair guess the filter is loaded.
Why diesel particulate filters choke round Three Ashes
