Thornhill, Caerphilly: Mobile DPF Cleaning
With on-site DPF cleaning, we travel to the car. The fitter turns up at your door over in Thornhill and starts. The diesel particulate filter is cleaned still on the vehicle, a DPF regeneration comes next, and you end up with the filter you started with.
Nobody travels until the figure is settled by the phone. The visit lasts typically around 2 hours and the clean begins from £299.
The light is already on and the motor is short of power — that is how we normally find people, and roughly what this page deals with.
Your DPF light is on — what now?
Not the filter, necessarily. Opening thing to get straight. A diagnostic goes before the work, because that same dash light has several candidate faults behind it.
How the motor is driven in the meantime counts too.
- Motor still driving normally on an amber light — have a go at a long constant run first. It costs nothing and frequently sorts the filter without assistance.
- That window has shut once the motor has fallen into limp mode. Driving will not get there now.
- Get it seen to rather than running it — diesel in the car, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone beyond the long-run stage.
Before the light, what the vehicle was showing you
By the time the light arrives, things have generally been slipping for weeks. It is late news:
- less power, especially going uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull like they did
- fuel use going worse
- the stop/start quietly giving up
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell in there
That is not evidence by itself. The light alongside them suggests a blocked filter.
The explanation diesel particulate filters choke round Thornhill
Being a rural hamlet, Thornhill throws up exactly the motoring a DPF copes with the poorest. Think about an ordinary week: the local primary school and home, Cefn Carnau Lane at a standstill before nine, a short hop to Heron Foods, a run to Caerphilly. Nothing there lasts long enough or gets hot enough to see through a regeneration. Soot that should burn off banks up instead.
The M4 sits under a mile from Thornhill, Cardiff under 10 miles out, and unless something carries you out that way regularly, whole weeks pass without the long steady run that scours a DPF. Geography does not help.
The point a DPF regeneration can no longer run
It is self-preservation: that is all limp mode amounts to. The real catch is that a sustained drive works by starting a regeneration, and under limp mode the revs will not rise and power is capped.
The usual advice — take it up the motorway — is sound, until it is not. The far side of that stage — limp mode — more driving will not manage it, and the filter needs cleaning.
DPF cleaning at the car in Thornhill
The filter does not come off. That is the bit most owners do not see coming: the job takes place with the DPF yet fitted to the motor, on your front, in a work car park, any place the vehicle can sit for a couple of hours.
The ECU is interrogated first, showing soot load by proportion and by mass, along with a look over of sensors, glow plugs and related components, so nothing is touched while another fault is still possible.
A cleaning solution next is injected through the access port on that car, opening out inside the filter to lift soot and ash a regeneration on its own will never move. Where the filter is badly blocked, allow for a second pass.
A regeneration follows, burning off what the clean has freed. Stay with the motor and it is done as a monitored drive out of Thornhill. Leave it and the regeneration is done statically, with live data checked once it is done.
Then a second check, proving the change, resetting the warning light and listing anything still showing. Both sets of figures are emailed over, so the before and after figures are kept.
What a DPF clean will not touch
Treatment fixes one thing: a filter choked with soot and ash. It does little for:
- the wrong reading from a temperature sensor
- a jammed EGR valve
- the AdBlue system going wrong
- injectors or glow plugs that block a regeneration completing whatsoever
- oil passing through the filter from a failing turbo
That is what the first diagnostic is for. If one of those proves the fault, you hear about it up front rather than once the money has gone already.
Two more worth bearing in mind. Leaving the filter gutted is not a solution — a vehicle without a working DPF fails its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your own filter is treated in place and returned into use.
What DPF cleaning comes to around Thornhill
Cleaning begins from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it covers the call-out, the booking, the scans and the advice.
Quoting a flat rate would not be honest. We fix it over phone, once the vehicle and its probable needs are known. The motor changes it, and so does the location — Thornhill, St Martins, or a spot farther out in the CF postcode area.
If the scan counts cleaning out, there is nothing to pay for it. You still pay that charge: someone travelled, carried out the diagnostic and passed on you the advice.
Aftercare is included by a 30-day warranty: should the light return within it, an engineer returns to Thornhill.
We were very pleased with the service and the job carried out. Jason was very helpful explaining everything to us. The company was very prompt and Jason turned up on time. We found all the staff extremely helpful, polite and professional.
Engineer very polite sorted problem now van runs like a F1 car will recommend to anyone with a dpf problem.
Well informed and efficient service, everything explained well and advised on what to do next as I had ongoing issues, now everything is working as it should, definitely recommend.
Where we get to near Thornhill, and what we clean
Whatever it is — private car, light van, light commercial, HGV, plant, construction machinery, farm vehicle — the one mobile service applies, and the filter never leaves it.
Most weeks there is usually someone on Cefn Carnau Lane, so Thornhill hardly ever means a special trip, and St Martins, Van and the villages past Caerphilly come with it. Phone anyway from further out across Caerphilly. Coverage extends UK-wide, and the slot you are offered comes down to the schedule rather than how far away you are.

Things Thornhill drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Does a long run sort it?
- If you catch it in time, and the motor is not in limp mode, sometimes. That means motorway speed for a sustained spell, rather than a quick trip to Heron Foods.
- Does the visit last long?
- That is typically around 2 hours, though a badly clogged filter can require cleaning twice, which runs on.
- The cost around Thornhill — what is it?
- Beginning from £299, with a charge for coming out that takes in the check and advice on what to do next. The vehicle and your address both move the figure, so we settle it on the phone.
- Have I got to be present?
- No. The vehicle needs space to stand for a couple of hours; nobody expects you to stand with it. If you would prefer to come along, the regeneration can be carried out as a monitored drive instead.
- Can someone get to Thornhill soon?
- You are looking at often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is now in the calendar. One call to 0303 330 1830 and you will learn what the CF area has open.
- Does the filter come away from the car?
- Not on the call-out service — it is cleaned where it stands. That job — a filter off, a filter back on — is not work we do.
- The light comes back — then what?
- Covered by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer heading back to Thornhill.
