Before the light, what the vehicle was warning you
Symptoms have generally been growing for a while before the light ever arrives. Last news, in other words:
- power falling off, particularly going uphill
- revs that will not rise the way they always did
- worse fuel consumption
- silently, the stop/start packs in
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell inside
Any one of those, taken singly, is not proof. It is a fair bet the filter is loaded once the light is there too.
Why diesel particulate filters block around The Warren
The motoring that belongs to a residential suburb like The Warren is the worst kind for a DPF. The school run to Harmans Water Primary School, Wychwood Avenue at a standstill at the morning rush, a few minutes to Tesco, the hop to Martins Heron — none of it runs long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration. Where a clean is not the answer
A filter blocked with soot and ash is the one thing treatment answers. It will not reach:
- a pressure or temperature sensor reporting a blockage that is not there
- an EGR valve held open
- an AdBlue system failure
- injectors or glow plugs that stop a regeneration completing in the first place
- oil passing through the filter from a failing turbo
The first diagnostic is there for exactly that. Where it is found to be one of those, you are let know before any work begins rather than after you have settled up for it.
Two more worth bearing in mind. Leaving the filter hollowed out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your own filter is cleaned in place and put back into use.
