Before the light, what the motor was showing you
Belated news, the light. The symptoms generally mount for weeks before it appears:
- going uphill, the power drops away
- revs that will not pull the way they always did
- worse fuel use
- the stop/start without a word giving up
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under acceleration
On its own, none of that is evidence. It is a fair assumption the filter is blocked once the light is there too.
Why diesel particulate filters clog round The Triangle
The Triangle is a rural village, and the driving that comes with one is the worst type for a DPF. Think about a typical week: St Briavels Parochial Church of England Primary School and home again, Mill Hill at a standstill before nine, a short hop to Tesco, a hop to Chepstow. Nothing there runs long enough or runs hot enough to finish a regeneration. Soot that should burn off builds up instead.

Soot and ash that a regeneration on its own will never move are loosened after that, by a solution put through the entry point on that vehicle, which spreads inside the filter. Badly loaded filters sometimes need a second pass.
Next, a regeneration drives off everything the clean freed. Come with the motor and it turns into a monitored drive out of The Triangle. Park it and the regeneration is done statically, with live data checked once it is done.
Then a second check, confirming the change, putting out the warning light and noting anything still logged. Both sets of figures are emailed over, so the before and after figures are kept.
The failures a DPF clean cannot cure
Only one fault is fixed by a clean: the filter blocked with ash and soot. It does little for:
- pressure sensors showing a blockage that is not there
- an EGR valve held open
- the AdBlue system failing
- worn glow plugs or injectors, so never a regeneration ever completes
- the turbo passing oil into the filter
Which is why the diagnostic happens first. Proving to be one of them means learning it before any work gets going, not after settling up for it.
Cutting the filter out is not a solution: without a serviceable DPF a vehicle cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is illegal. DPF renewal is the term people look up, though nothing is swapped — your existing filter is cleared in place and returned into use. Two more worth bearing in mind.
