Mobile DPF Cleaner

Mobile DPF Cleaning covering The Riggs, Scottish Borders

Call-out DPF cleaning goes to the car. The technician arrives at your door across The Riggs and sets up. The diesel particulate filter is cleared on the vehicle, a DPF regeneration runs after it, and you keep the filter you came with.

The visit runs typically around 2 hours, the clean begins from £299, and the price is settled over the phone before anyone travels.

The light is on already and the car is short of power — that is how we generally find people, and what this page is about.

The DPF light is on. What now?

Not the DPF, necessarily. Opening thing to say. A scan goes before the cleaning, because that same dash light has plenty of possible faults behind it.

How the motor is run in the meantime matters too.

  • Amber light, car still driving normally — a long constant run can still shift it alone. Costs zero, and worth a try before you book anything.
  • That window has closed once the motor has fallen into limp mode. A drive will not do it now.
  • Diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop booking long drives and get it checked.

Signs the car has been showing you

Late news, the light. The symptoms tend to build for a while before it arrives:

  • less power, especially pulling uphill
  • you notice the revs stop short of where they used to go
  • fuel consumption going worse
  • without a word, the stop/start bows out
  • the interior smelling of diesel, or smoke when you pull away

That is not proof alone. The light alongside them suggests a full filter.

What blocks diesel particulate filters around The Riggs

For a DPF, the worst motoring is the type you meet around an area such as The Riggs. The school run to the local primary school, B709 at a standstill at half eight, ten minutes to The Co-operative Food, the dash to Galashiels — not one bit of it lasts long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration. Unburnt soot that should clear builds up instead.

Except when you have a standing reason to drive out to the A74(M), under 25 miles from The Riggs, or out to Edinburgh under 50 miles away, whole weeks pass without a long unbroken stint. Geography is against you.

DPF regeneration, and the moment limp mode ends it

It is self-protection: that is all limp mode amounts to. The entire catch is that a sustained drive works by setting off a regeneration, and under limp mode the revs will not rise and power is limited.

The common advice — take it up the motorway — is sensible, right until it is not. Beyond that line — limp mode — road work will not manage it, and the filter wants a clean.

Cleaning a blocked diesel particulate filter in The Riggs, Scottish Borders

DPF cleaning at the vehicle in The Riggs

Most people do not see coming this detail: the filter remains. The job takes place with the DPF even now bolted to the vehicle — on your drive, in a work car park, anywhere the car can wait for a few hours.

A diagnostic comes first — live data off the ECU, soot load by proportion and by actual weight, and a review of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and associated parts, so other faults are eliminated before a thing is touched.

A cleaning fluid next is injected through the entry point on that motor, spreading inside the filter to free soot and ash a regeneration alone will never shift. Sometimes a filter is blocked enough to need doing twice.

Then a regeneration, to drive off what the clean has lifted. That is a monitored drive out of The Riggs if you are along, or a static regeneration where the vehicle sits, with the running data read once done.

Both reports go over by email, so the figures from either end are on record. The second diagnostic is what proves the change, resets the light and logs whatever is still showing.

When a DPF clean is not the solution

Only one fault is answered by cleaning: the filter clogged with ash and soot. It does little for:

  • a pressure or temperature sensor reporting a block that is not there
  • the EGR valve held open
  • a failure in the AdBlue system
  • failed glow plugs or injectors, so never a regeneration ever runs
  • a turbo putting oil through the filter

Finding that out is the first scan's whole job. Where it proves to be one of those, you are let know before any work starts rather than after you have paid for it.

DPF renewal is what people look up, but no part is swapped: the filter you own is treated where it sits and returned to use. Nor is having it gutted a remedy, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes unlawful. Two more things worth knowing.

What DPF cleaning comes to across The Riggs

A clean starts from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it takes in the call-out, the booking, the scans and the advice.

Quoting a flat rate would not be straight. We agree it over phone, once the car and its likely needs are clear. What you run and where you are both move it: The Riggs itself, across at Traquair, or further out across the EH postcode area.

Where the scan says a clean will not do it, you are not charged for a clean. Because the visit, the check and the advice have happened, the call-out charge still holds.

Aftercare is included by a 30-day warranty: should the light come back within it, an engineer returns to The Riggs.

A vehicle having its DPF treated across The Riggs

Perfect service. I would recommend DPF Fixer to anyone. Turned up on time. Did a good job and a sensible price.

Christopher C.

I waited a month just to see, but now I'm so happy with their work, Wonderful company, easy booking, they really do their work impeccably and are reasonably flexible. They did work on my civic, ash values went from 66grams to 0.

Albert M.

An excellent service my mechanic was Ashley a perfect gentleman and extremely thorough throughout, the procedure that took 90mins to resolve the issue of a "full" DPF clean, which was totally successful.

Where we travel round The Riggs, and what we clean

The one on-site service covers private cars, vans and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, plant and construction machinery and farm vehicles, and on every one the filter is treated on the vehicle rather than taken anywhere.

The same run that has engineers on B709 most weeks covers The Riggs, Traquair, Walkerburn and the spots beyond Innerleithen. Phone anyway from even further out through Scottish Borders. Coverage reaches UK-wide, and the day you are given hangs on the schedule rather than how far away you are.

The Riggs itself

The Riggs is a small locality in the Scottish Borders, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of around 185 metres. The Riggs lies near several notable towns, including Traquair, Innerleithen, and Howford, and is approximately 25 miles from Edinburgh. The Riggs is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and a population of around 115 residents.

Things The Riggs drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Is a long drive enough on its own?
Sometimes, if you get it early and the motor has not fallen into limp mode. Fifteen minutes to The Co-operative Food and back will not manage it; motorway speed, kept for a while, will.
The visit takes how long?
It is typically around 2 hours. A heavily clogged filter can need a second clean, which lengthens that.
What does it run to in The Riggs?
The call-out charge takes in the visit, the diagnostic and the advice; cleaning itself starts from £299. We settle it on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both move the price.
Is it essential for me to be present?
Somewhere for the car to wait, for a couple of hours, is all that is needed. Not you. Ride along if you like, and the regeneration becomes a watched drive.
Travelling to The Riggs — how soon?
You are in for often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is already in the calendar. Phone 0303 330 1830 and you will learn what is open across the EH area.
Is the filter lifted off the motor?
On the on-site service, no: the filter is cleaned in place. We do not lift filters off or fit them back on, either way.
And if the light comes back?
Included by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer coming back to The Riggs.
