By the time the light appears, things have usually been going wrong for some time. It is late news:
- less power, particularly pulling uphill
- the revs no longer rise the way they once did
- the fuel consumption is worse
- silently, the stop/start packs in
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gears
By itself, none of that is evidence. The light with them suggests a full filter.

Finding that out is the first scan's purpose. Turning out to be one of them means finding out it before the work gets going, not after handing over a penny.
DPF renewal is what people search for, but no part is replaced: the filter you own is cleared where it sits and sent back into service. Nor is having it gutted a remedy, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes an offence. Two more things worth bearing in mind.
