Before the light, what the motor was showing you
By the time the light shows, things have generally been deteriorating for some time. It is last news:
- less power, particularly climbing uphill
- you find the revs fall short of where they used to go
- fuel economy getting worse
- a stop/start that has silently bowed out
- diesel in the interior, or smoke on the way up through the box
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not proof. Next to the light alongside them, the filter is a fair bet.
What blocks diesel particulate filters around The North
The North is a small village, and the driving that comes with one is the worst kind for a DPF. Not one bit of it goes on long enough or is hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration: the school run to Redbrook Church of England Primary School, School Lane crawling at half past eight, five minutes to Lidl, the dash to Lydney. Why limp mode stops a DPF regeneration
Limp mode is the motor protecting itself. With pulling power capped and the revs kept low, the regeneration the filter needs can never run at all. That tells, because setting off one is just what a long run does.
Running it up the motorway is the standard advice, and it holds right up to a point. Once the motor is in limp mode you are past that point, and the filter requires a clean rather than more driving.

Nothing leaves the vehicle. That throws people. The DPF remains fitted where it is and the work goes on around it, on a drive, in a works car park, wherever it can stand for a few hours.
The ECU is read first, giving soot load by percent and by weight, along with a look over of sensor readings, glow plugs and related hardware, so nothing is touched while another fault is still in play.
A cleaning solution then is fed in through the access port on that motor, spreading inside the filter to free soot and ash a regeneration by itself will never shift. Sometimes a filter is clogged enough to need doing twice.
Then a regeneration, to burn off what the clean has lifted. Either it goes as a monitored drive out of The North, with you present, or it goes where the vehicle sits and the real-time data is verified once done.
Then a second check, confirming the change, putting out the warning light and logging anything still showing. Both reports are emailed, so the before and after figures are kept.
Where cleaning is not the fix
A filter choked with soot and ash is the one thing a clean cures. It will not reach:
- the wrong signal from a pressure or temperature sensor
- the EGR valve held open
- an AdBlue system problem
- worn glow plugs or injectors, so no regeneration ever runs
- turbo failure, with oil entering the filter
That is what the first scan is for. You are told before all work gets going, not after you have paid, where it turns out to be one of those.
DPF renewal is what people look up, but no part is replaced: the filter you own is treated where it sits and sent back into service. Nor is having it cut out a solution, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes unlawful. Two more things worth knowing.
