Mobile DPF Cleaning serving The Howe, Cumbria
On-site DPF cleaning comes to the car. No garage, no filter going anywhere. A technician travels to your door over in The Howe, cleans the diesel particulate filter as it sits, carries out a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you started with.
Nobody travels until the number is agreed by the phone. The visit runs typically around 2 hours and the clean starts from £299.
Most drivers find us with the light showing, and the car down on power. That is the position this page is meant for.
Your DPF light is on — what now?
The unit is not always what is wrong, and that goes first. A scan happens before any cleaning, because that same dashboard light has plenty of likely faults behind it.
It matters what you get with the car between now and the visit.
- Worth a shot before you book anything: amber light, motor driving as normal, just one constant run, no cost.
- Motor already gone into limp mode — that window has gone. A drive will not shift it now.
- Get it looked at rather than running it — diesel in the car, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone well past the long-run stage.
What the motor has been showing you
By the time the light shows, things have generally been going wrong for some time. It is belated news:
- power tailing off, particularly pulling uphill
- you see the revs stop short of where they used to go
- fuel economy turning worse
- quietly, the stop/start gives up
- smoke under acceleration, or a diesel smell in the car
None of that is conclusive by itself. The light beside them points at a blocked filter.
What chokes diesel particulate filters around The Howe
The driving that comes with a rural hamlet like The Howe is the least kind type for a DPF. The school run to Crosthwaite CofE School, Lyth Valley Road at a halt at the morning rush, ten minutes to Asda, the run to Oxenholme Lake District — none of it runs long enough or is hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration. The soot that should clear collects instead.
Geography does not assist either. The M6 is under 10 miles from The Howe and Lancaster is under 25 miles away, so unless something pulls you out that way routinely, entire weeks go by without the long unbroken run that would empty the filter on its own.
Why limp mode stops a DPF regeneration
The motor is defending itself, which is what limp mode is. A sustained drive works by starting a regeneration, and that is precisely what limp mode rules out: power limited, revs held down, no regeneration on offer.
Running it up the motorway is the standard advice, and it stands right up to a line. The filter needs cleaning rather than driving once the vehicle has gone into limp mode.
The vehicle stays in place for call-out DPF cleaning across The Howe
Most drivers do not anticipate this bit: the filter stays put. The job takes place with the DPF yet fitted to the vehicle — on your driveway, in a work car park, anywhere the vehicle can wait for a few hours.
The ECU is taken first, reporting soot load by proportion and by mass, along with a check of sensor feeds, glow plugs and connected parts, so nothing is touched while another fault is still possible.
Then the clean. A cleaning fluid goes in through the entry point on that vehicle and opens out inside the filter, loosening the soot and ash a regeneration alone will never shift. A second pass is sometimes called for on badly clogged filters.
A regeneration follows, burning off what the clean has lifted. If you are there, that is done as a monitored drive out of The Howe; if not, on the spot where the car stands, with the real-time data checked after.
Both sets of figures are sent by email, so the figures from either end are recorded. The second scan is what confirms the change, clears the light and lists whatever is still outstanding.
The faults a DPF clean cannot fix
A filter clogged with soot and ash is the one thing cleaning cures. It will not reach:
- pressure or temperature sensors reporting a block that is not there
- a jammed EGR valve
- a problem in the AdBlue system
- a regeneration that simply never starts, because of glow plugs or injectors
- a turbo putting oil through the filter
Finding that out is the first scan's purpose. You are warned before the work gets going, not after you have settled up, should it turns out to be one of those.
DPF renewal is what people search for, but no part is swapped: the filter you already own is cleaned where it sits and returned to use. Nor is having it gutted a remedy, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes an offence. Two more things worth knowing.
What DPF cleaning runs to in The Howe
A call-out charge applies whatever follows, and takes in the visit, the booking fee, the diagnostic and the advice passed on. Cleaning itself opens from £299.
No single flat rate would be straight, so the figure is settled on the phone once we have the vehicle and what the filter is apt to need. What you run and where you are both shift it: The Howe itself, out at Row, or farther out across the LA postcode area.
You are not charged for a clean that the diagnostic says will not help. Because the visit, the scan and the advice have taken place, the call-out charge even so applies.
Aftercare is covered by a 30-day warranty: should the light return within it, an engineer heads back to The Howe.
A very efficient service by the 2 men that came to me today. It didn't take too long, very professional and i'm so pleased, thank you, Anita Robertson-Wynne.
Igor the engineer was informative and to the point and actually sorted the issue out. Experience from query to the actual job was great.
DPR Fixer Nat came and fixed our diesel filter, was very efficient, courteous and polite, would recommend him to anyone.
Where we travel round The Howe, and what we clean
Whatever it is — estate, light van, light commercial, lorry, plant, construction machinery, agricultural machine — the one mobile service holds, and the filter never departs it.
The same round that has our engineers on Lyth Valley Road most weeks covers The Howe, Row, Pool Bank and the spots beyond Brigsteer. It is the diary, not the distance, that settles whether it is today or tomorrow, and coverage extends UK-wide — so call still from further out across Cumbria.

Frequent questions on DPF cleaning in The Howe
- Does a long run shift it?
- Sometimes, if you catch it in time and the motor has not fallen into limp mode. A long run at motorway speed is what it needs — not ten minutes to Asda and back.
- Broadly how long does it last?
- Allow typically around 2 hours — heavily loaded filters sometimes take a second pass, which extends it.
- Cost in The Howe — what is it?
- Opening from £299, with a charge for travelling that pays for the check and advice on what to do next. Settling it is done by phone, since what you run and where you live both change the figure.
- Must I be present in person?
- Nobody expects you to stand with it — the motor only wants a spot to sit for a couple of hours. The regeneration can be carried out as a watched drive if you would prefer to be there.
- When can someone come to The Howe?
- Depending on the diary, often same-day or next-day is normal. Call 0303 330 1830 and you will hear what is available across the LA area.
- Is the filter removed from the vehicle?
- On the on-site service, no: the filter is treated in place. And neither does getting a filter off nor fitting one back on is work we do.
- The light returns — then what?
- Taken in by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer heading back to The Howe.
