The Hook, Worcestershire: Mobile DPF Cleaning
Call-out DPF cleaning comes to the vehicle. A fitter arrives at your place in The Hook, treats the diesel particulate filter while it is fitted to the motor, performs a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you started with.
You'll be given a number by phone before anyone leaves, the clean opening from £299, and the visit lasting typically around 2 hours.
Written for the position most drivers are in: the light already on, the vehicle struggling for power, and the clean still to arrange.
What to check when the DPF light comes on
First thing: it is not automatically the filter. A check happens before all work, because that same panel light has a number of possible faults behind it.
The motoring you get in the meantime matters. That is the second thing.
- A long constant run may even now do it, provided the light is amber and the car drives as normal. Costs zero, so have a go at that before booking.
- Once the car is in limp mode, a long run will not reach it. The window has closed.
- Stop booking long drives and get it seen to if the interior stinks of diesel or there is black smoke when you accelerate.
What the motor has been showing you
Belated news, the light. The symptoms generally mount for some time before it appears:
- less power, especially pulling uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb as before
- consumption that is worse than it used to be
- the stop/start silently bowing out
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell inside
None of that is evidence by itself. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is blocked.
Why diesel particulate filters block near The Hook
The Hook is a rural hamlet, and the driving that comes with one is the poorest type for a DPF. The school run to Upton-Upon-Severn CofE Primary and Pre School, Hyde Lane at a crawl at half past eight, ten minutes to Warners, the dash to Great Malvern — not one bit of it lasts long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration. Soot that should clear builds up instead.
Neither is distant from The Hook: under 5 miles to the M50, under 10 miles to Worcester. Neither is on the way to anywhere most weeks, though, so the run that would scour a filter never gets made.
Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration stops working
The vehicle is protecting itself, which is what limp mode is. A long drive works by starting a regeneration, and that is precisely what limp mode rules out: power limited, revs held down, no regeneration available.
Running it up the motorway is the common advice, and it holds right up to a line. The filter requires cleaning rather than road work once the motor has dropped into limp mode.
Where the motor stands is where the DPF is treated in The Hook
On your drive, in a work car park, wherever the car can stand for a couple of hours: the job takes place with the filter yet bolted on, which is the part most people do not expect.
The ECU is read first, showing soot load by percentage and by weight, along with a review of sensors, glow plugs and connected components, so nothing is cleaned while another fault is still possible.
After that comes the clean itself: cleaning fluid in through the car's own entry point, spreading inside the filter and loosening what a regeneration will not. Severely blocked filters sometimes require a second pass.
What the clean has freed is then driven off by a regeneration. If you are there, that is done as a monitored drive out of The Hook; if not, in place where the vehicle sits, with the live data checked once done.
Then a second scan, confirming the change, putting out the warning light and noting anything still showing. Both reports are emailed, so the before and after figures are recorded.
What a DPF clean will not fix
A filter clogged with soot and ash is the one thing a clean answers. It will not reach:
- sensors, pressure or temperature, showing a block that is not real
- a failed EGR valve
- an AdBlue system fault
- a regeneration that never runs, because of glow plugs or injectors
- a turbo pushing oil through the filter
Finding that out is the first diagnostic's job. You are told before all work begins, not after you have settled up, where it turns out to be one of those.
DPF renewal is what people type in, but no part is exchanged: the filter you have is treated where it sits and sent back into service. Nor is having it hollowed out a fix, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes unlawful. Two more things worth noting.
DPF cleaning prices across The Hook
Each visit takes a call-out charge — coming out to you, making the booking, running the scan and giving the advice. The clean itself starts from £299.
Naming a flat rate would not be truthful. We agree it on the phone, once the motor and its likely needs are established. The place you are counts as much as what you own: The Hook itself, Duckswich close by, or farther out within the WR postcode area.
Where the check says treatment will not help, you are not charged for treatment. Because the visit, the diagnostic and the advice have been done, the call-out charge nonetheless applies.
If the light comes back inside that window, an engineer comes back out to The Hook — the job carries a 30-day warranty including aftercare.
Your fitter, Zac, came at the agreed time and did the work very efficiently outside our house. He explained everything fully and went with me to test drive the car to make sure everything was rectified. Very happy with everything. 10/10.
The engineer did a fantastic job, quickly fixed the issue and provided an outstanding service i would highly recommend him.
A friendly and professional service, I was particularly impressed with the stress placed on understanding the way in which the exhaust emission control system works and the importance of regularly topping up the AdBlue tank.
Vehicles we clean, and where we reach around The Hook
Whatever it is — private car, light van, light commercial, HGV, plant, construction machinery, farm vehicle — the very same on-site service applies, and the filter never quits it.
The Hook is hardly ever a special trip: our engineers are working Hyde Lane week in week out, and the same run takes in Duckswich, Tunnel Hill and the spots out past Hanley Castle. Even further out through Worcestershire is still worth a call — coverage reaches UK-wide, and it is the calendar rather than the distance that settles between one day and the next.

What The Hook drivers want to know about DPF cleaning
- Is a long drive enough on its own?
- If you get it early, and the car is not in limp mode, sometimes. Ten minutes to Warners and back will not be enough; motorway speed, kept for a stretch, will.
- How long does the visit take?
- It is typically around 2 hours. A heavily loaded filter can require a second clean, which adds to that.
- How much does it come to across The Hook?
- Opening from £299, with a charge for coming out that covers the check and advice on what to do next. The vehicle and your address both change the number, so we price on the phone.
- Do I have to be there?
- No. The motor wants space to wait for a couple of hours; you do not need to stand with it. Wanting to be there is welcome: the regeneration then runs out on the move, monitored.
- How soon can someone come to The Hook?
- That depends on the diary, but it is often same-day or next-day. Ring 0303 330 1830 and we will tell you what is available across the WR area.
- Does the filter come off the car?
- On the mobile service, no: the filter is done in place. We do not take filters off or bolt them back on, in either direction.
- And if the light reappears?
- Included by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer heading back to The Hook.
