Mobile DPF Cleaning in The Hem and Shropshire
Sorting the DPF happens at the motor, not at a workshop. A fitter turns up at your place over in The Hem, cleans the diesel particulate filter while it is attached to the car, performs a DPF regeneration, and you hold on to the filter you came with.
You'll be given a price by phone before anyone goes, the clean opening from £299, and the visit running typically around 2 hours.
If the light is on already and the vehicle is short of power, this page is for you. That is how most drivers end up here.
DPF light on? What to do
It might not be the unit at all. That is the main thing. A check comes before all work, because that same panel light has several possible faults behind it.
How the car is driven in the meantime matters too.
- A long steady run may yet manage it, provided the light is amber and the motor runs as normal. Costs nothing, so attempt that before booking.
- Once the car is in limp mode, driving will not reach it. The window has shut.
- A diesel smell inside, or black smoke under hard acceleration, is the moment to stop booking long drives and ring.
The vehicle has been warning you already
Symptoms have generally been building for a while before the light ever appears. Last news, in other words:
- dropping away on power, above all uphill
- you notice the revs stop short of where they once went
- the fuel consumption is down
- without a word, the stop/start packs in
- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell in the car
That is not conclusive by itself. With the light, it is a fair guess the filter is blocked.
The reason diesel particulate filters block around The Hem
For a DPF, the poorest driving is the kind you get in a small village such as The Hem. Think about an ordinary week: Holmer Lake Primary School and home, Hem Lane at a crawl before half nine, a quick trip to Lidl, a run to Shifnal. None of it there runs long enough or gets hot enough to complete a regeneration. The unburnt soot banks up rather than clearing.
The M54 lies under 3 miles from The Hem, Wolverhampton under 15 miles away, and unless something takes you out that way regularly, full weeks slip past without the long steady run that clears a filter. Geography does not assist.
Why limp mode blocks a DPF regeneration
Limp mode is the car defending itself. The entire difficulty is that a sustained drive works by triggering a regeneration, and under limp mode the revs will not climb and power is held down.
The common advice — take it up the motorway — is sensible, up until it is not. In limp mode you are past that point: cleaning is what will do it, not more miles.
Where the motor stands is where the DPF is cleaned in The Hem
Most drivers do not anticipate this part: the filter stays on. The job takes place with the DPF still fixed to the car — on your front, in a work car park, anywhere the vehicle can sit for a couple of hours.
First a check. Running ECU data, the soot load as a percent and as a mass, the sensor feeds, the glow plugs, the related components — all of it read before anything is touched.
A cleaning fluid then goes in through the access port on that motor, spreading inside the filter to free soot and ash a regeneration alone will never budge. A second pass is sometimes called for on badly blocked filters.
Then a regeneration, to clear what the clean has freed. If you are there, that is done as a monitored drive out of The Hem; if not, on the spot where the motor waits, with the real-time data checked after.
Then a second diagnostic, proving the change, clearing the warning light and noting anything still logged. Both sets of figures are emailed over, so the before and after figures are on record.
Where a clean is not the solution
Cleaning fixes one thing: a filter clogged with soot and ash. It does little for:
- pressure or temperature sensors showing a block that is not there
- EGR valves that jam open
- an AdBlue system fault
- glow plugs or injectors stopping the regeneration completing at all
- the turbo putting oil into the filter
The first check is there for exactly that. Where one of those turns out to be the fault, you find out about it at the outset rather than once the money has gone altogether.
Hollowing the filter out is not a remedy: without a working DPF a vehicle fails its MOT, and driving it is an offence. DPF renewal is the term people search for, though nothing is replaced — your own filter is cleaned in place and put back into use. Two more worth noting.
DPF cleaning prices in The Hem
Cleaning opens from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it covers the call-out, the booking, the checks and the advice.
Quoting a flat rate would not be straight. We settle it on the phone, once the vehicle and its probable needs are clear. The motor shifts it, and so does the postcode — The Hem, The Wyke, or somewhere farther out in the TF postcode area.
You are not asked to pay for a clean that the check says will not work. You even so pay that charge: someone came out, ran the diagnostic and gave you the advice.
If the light returns inside that period, an engineer travels back out to The Hem — the job includes a 30-day warranty including aftercare.

Vehicles we clean, and where we reach near The Hem
Cars, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs, construction and plant machinery, agricultural vehicles — one on-site service across all of them, and on all of them the filter is treated in place rather than taken anywhere.
The Hem is rarely a special trip: technicians are along Hem Lane most weeks, and the same run picks up The Wyke, Nedge Hill and the spots out past Shifnal. It is the schedule, not the distance, that settles whether it is one day or the next, and coverage runs UK-wide — so call even from even further out through Shropshire.

Things The Hem drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Can I merely take it for a long drive?
- Soon enough, and with the car out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. It needs a sustained run at motorway speed, not fifteen minutes flat to Lidl and back.
- How long does the visit take?
- Plan on typically around 2 hours — heavily loaded filters sometimes require a second pass, which adds to it.
- How much does it cost in The Hem?
- Starting from £299, with a charge for coming out that covers the check and advice on what to do next. Both the vehicle and where you are change it, which is why pricing goes by phone.
- Have I have to be around?
- Nobody expects you to stand with it — the car only requires somewhere to sit for a couple of hours. Preferring to be there is fine: the regeneration then runs out on the open road, monitored.
- Getting to The Hem — how soon?
- Depending on the calendar, often same-day or next-day is usual. Ring 0303 330 1830 and you will learn what is open across the TF area.
- Will the filter be lifted off?
- It is cleaned where it is, on the call-out service. Neither taking a filter off nor fitting one back on is work we do.
- Suppose the light reappears?
- Taken in by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer heading back to The Hem.
