Mobile DPF Cleaning in The Grange and City of Edinburgh
With call-out DPF cleaning, we travel to the vehicle. No garage, no filter coming off. A fitter comes to your place in The Grange, cleans the diesel particulate filter where it is, performs a DPF regeneration, and you keep the filter you started with.
The visit lasts typically around 2 hours, the clean begins from £299, and the number is settled over the phone before anyone sets off.
Written for the state most drivers are in: the light already on, the vehicle starved for power, and the clean still to arrange.
Your DPF light is showing — what now?
Not the unit, necessarily. First thing to get straight. That light can arise from a number of faults, not merely one, so the visit opens with a diagnostic and not with cleaning.
It tells what you manage with the vehicle between now and the visit.
- Amber light, vehicle still driving normally — a long steady run can yet clear it alone. Costs nothing at all, and worth a try before you ring anything.
- A drive will not reach it now — limp mode means that window has by then shut.
- Stop booking long drives and get it looked at if the interior stinks of diesel or there is black smoke when you press on.
Before the light, what the vehicle was warning you
By the time the light appears, things have usually been slipping for a while. It is late news:
- going uphill, the power falls off
- an engine whose revs will not rise like they did
- worse fuel consumption
- without a word, the stop/start packs in
- diesel in the cabin, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
That is not proof on its own. The light alongside them suggests a loaded filter.
The explanation diesel particulate filters block near The Grange
For a DPF, the poorest motoring is the sort you find around a residential suburb such as The Grange. The school run to the local primary school, Kilgraston Road at a halt at half eight, five minutes to Waitrose, the dash to Haymarket — none of it lasts long enough or is hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration. Soot that should burn away builds up instead.
Where you sit does not help either. The M8 is under 5 miles from The Grange and Edinburgh is under 3 miles away, so unless something takes you out that way often, entire weeks go by without the sustained run that might empty the filter alone.
DPF regeneration, and the point limp mode kills it
The car is protecting itself, which is what limp mode amounts to. The entire difficulty is that a proper drive works by starting a regeneration, and in limp mode the revs will not rise and power is limited.
The usual advice — take it up the motorway — is sensible, right until it is not. Once the vehicle is in limp mode you are past that point, and the filter requires cleaning rather than more driving.
DPF cleaning at the motor in The Grange
Nothing comes off the car. That throws people. The DPF stays bolted where it is and the work happens around it, on a driveway, in a works car park, wherever it can stand for a few hours.
The ECU is taken first, reporting soot load by percentage and by weight, along with a look over of sensor feeds, glow plugs and associated components, so nothing is touched while another fault is still possible.
A solution then is fed in through the access point on that motor, spreading inside the filter to free soot and ash a regeneration alone will never shift. Where the filter is heavily loaded, expect a second pass.
Then a regeneration, to clear what the clean has freed. That is a monitored drive out of The Grange if you are there, or a static regeneration where the car waits, with the real-time data verified after.
Finally the diagnostic runs again — the change verified, the light cleared, anything still open noted. Both sets of figures reach you by email, so the numbers are recorded.
What a DPF clean will not touch
One thing is what a clean fixes — a filter clogged with soot and ash. It does nothing for:
- the wrong figure from a temperature or pressure sensor
- an EGR valve held open
- an AdBlue system failure
- injectors or glow plugs that stop a regeneration completing whatsoever
- oil coming through the filter from a worn turbo
The first scan is there for just that. You are let know before the work begins, not after you have handed over, should it turns out to be one of those.
Gutting the filter out is not a remedy: without a working DPF a vehicle will fail its MOT, and driving it is an offence. DPF renewal is the wording people type in, though nothing is exchanged — your existing filter is cleared in place and returned into use. Two more worth noting.
DPF cleaning costs around The Grange
The treatment opens from £299. A call-out charge is added to every visit, and pays for the call-out itself, the booking, the scan and the advice that goes with it.
Not one flat rate would be truthful, so the price is settled over the phone once we are told the vehicle and what the filter is going to need. What you own and where you are both move it: The Grange itself, out at Sciennes, or otherwise out within the EH postcode area.
Treatment that will not do it is not treatment you pay for, and the diagnostic is what says so. You nonetheless pay that charge: someone turned up, ran the check and passed on you the advice.
Aftercare is taken in by a 30-day warranty: should the light return within it, an engineer heads back to The Grange.
Igor the engineer was informative and to the point and actually sorted the issue out. Experience from query to the actual job was great.
Very impressed with the service. Arranged an appointment the day after I called, and kept me informed of actual time. Friendly Engineer, called Daz arrived. Talked through everything clearly and completed work quickly. Gave good and honest advice - would definitely use again. Thank you!
Done with efficiency and professionalism. Will recommend. Peter was very friendly and easy to talk to. Very professional. Very happy customer.
The vehicles we clean and the area we cover round The Grange
The filter is treated in place on all of them: cars and estates, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs, plant machinery, farm vehicles. Nothing is taken anywhere.
Nearly every week there is usually someone on Kilgraston Road, so The Grange rarely means a special trip, and Sciennes, Bruntsfield and the spots past Danderhall are on the way. Coverage is UK-wide, so even further out through City of Edinburgh is nonetheless worth a call, and what picks between today and tomorrow is the calendar rather than the distance.

What The Grange drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Is a long drive enough by itself?
- Sometimes, if you spot it early and the car has not dropped into limp mode. A long run at motorway speed is what it takes — not five minutes flat to Waitrose and back.
- Does the visit run long?
- Allow typically around 2 hours — heavily clogged filters sometimes need a second pass, which adds to it.
- How much does it run to in The Grange?
- The call-out charge pays for the visit, the check and the advice; treatment itself begins from £299. The vehicle and your address both change the price, so we price on the phone.
- Do I have to be around?
- No. The motor needs somewhere to wait for a couple of hours; nobody expects you to stand with it. Preferring to be there is no problem: the regeneration then is done out on the open road, monitored.
- Getting to The Grange — how soon?
- That hangs on the calendar, but it is often same-day or next-day. Phone 0303 330 1830 and we will tell you what is free across the EH area.
- The filter — does it leave the motor?
- Not on the call-out service — it is cleaned where it sits. Neither taking a filter off nor fitting one back on is work we do.
- Suppose the light returns?
- The 30-day warranty covers aftercare, including an engineer heading back to The Grange.
