Mobile DPF Cleaner

The Close, Wiltshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning

With mobile DPF cleaning, we come to the vehicle. Your motor isn't taken off and the filter does not leave it. A technician arrives at your door in The Close, treats the diesel particulate filter still on the vehicle and carries out a DPF regeneration.

You'll know a figure by phone before anyone leaves, the clean opening from £299, and the visit taking typically around 2 hours.

Most owners find us with the light showing, and the vehicle short of power. That is the situation this page is written for.

The DPF light is on. What then?

The unit is not always what is to blame, and that goes first. Cleaning is not where a visit opens. A diagnostic is — a number of faults appear as the same signal.

It matters what you do with the vehicle between now and the booking.

  • Amber light, car still driving normally — a long even run can yet clear it on its own. Costs zero, and worth a try before you book anything.
  • That window has closed once the motor has slipped into limp mode. Motoring will not get there now.
  • A diesel smell in the car, or black smoke under hard acceleration, is the stage to stop booking long drives and call.

The motor has been showing you already

Late news, the light. The symptoms usually build for some time before it appears:

  • power tailing off, particularly climbing uphill
  • the revs no longer pull the way they always did
  • consumption that is worse than it used to be
  • quietly, the stop/start bows out
  • a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under the throttle

That is not evidence alone. Alongside the light, it is a fair guess the filter is full.

Why diesel particulate filters block near The Close

Being a residential suburb, The Close throws up exactly the driving a DPF copes with least well. Not one bit of it runs long enough or runs hot enough for the filter to complete a regeneration: the school run to St Osmund's Catholic Primary School, Salisbury, St. Nicholas' Road crawling at half past eight, five minutes to Sainsbury's, the dash to Salisbury. Instead of burning off, the soot load builds up.

Except when you have a regular reason to get out to the M27, under 15 miles from The Close, or over to Salisbury under a mile away, whole weeks pass without a sustained stint. Geography is against you.

DPF regeneration, and the point limp mode stops it

The vehicle is looking after itself, which is what limp mode amounts to. A sustained drive works by setting off a regeneration, and that is precisely what limp mode blocks: power capped, revs held down, no regeneration available.

So the standard advice to take it up the motorway is good advice, until it stops being. Once the car is in limp mode you are beyond that stage, and the filter wants a clean rather than driving.

Most drivers do not expect this detail: the filter stays on. The job is done with the DPF yet fixed to the motor — on your driveway, in a work car park, any place the car can stand for a couple of hours.

Nothing is cleaned until other faults are cleared. That involves a check first: real-time data off the ECU, soot load by proportion and by weight, and a check of the sensors, glow plugs and associated hardware.

Next comes the clean itself: cleaning fluid in through the vehicle's own entry point, spreading inside the filter and lifting what a regeneration will not. A second pass is sometimes called for on severely clogged filters.

Next, a regeneration clears everything the clean freed. If you are there, that is done as a monitored drive out of The Close; if not, statically where the vehicle sits, with the live data verified after.

A second diagnostic proves the change, puts out the warning light and logs anything still showing. Both sets of figures are sent over, so you end up with the before and after figures to hand.

What a DPF clean will not touch

Treatment cures one thing: a filter clogged with soot and ash. It does no good for:

  • a temperature or pressure sensor flagging a restriction that is not there
  • a failed EGR valve
  • a problem in the AdBlue system
  • glow plugs or injectors blocking the regeneration starting at all
  • turbo trouble, with oil getting into the filter

Which is why the scan comes first. When one of those turns out to be the fault, you find out about it in advance rather than once the money has gone already.

Two more worth noting. Leaving the filter gutted is not a fix — a vehicle without a working DPF fails its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your own filter is cleaned in place and put back into use.

DPF cleaning prices in The Close

The clean starts from £299. A call-out charge is added to every visit, and covers the call-out itself, the booking, the check and the advice that goes with it.

Not one flat rate would be straight, so the number is agreed over the phone once we have the vehicle and what the filter is going to need. What you run and where you are both change it: The Close itself, over at Harnham, or further out in the SP postcode area.

You are not charged for a clean that the scan says will not help. The call-out charge even so holds, because the visit, the check and the advice have happened.

The job comes with a 30-day warranty covering aftercare, including an engineer coming back out to The Close if the light reappears inside that time.

Where we reach round The Close, and what we clean

The filter is treated where it sits on all of them: cars and estates, panel vans and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, plant machinery, farm vehicles. Nothing is taken anywhere.

Technicians are along St. Nicholas' Road most weeks, so The Close is hardly ever a special trip, and the same run takes in Harnham, Salisbury and the places out past Britford. Coverage is UK-wide, so even further out across Wiltshire is nonetheless worth a call, and what decides between today and tomorrow is the schedule rather than the distance.

What The Close drivers ask about DPF cleaning

Does a long run shift it?
Sometimes, if you catch it early and the car has not fallen into limp mode. That means motorway speed for a steady stretch, rather than a quick trip to Sainsbury's.
How long does the visit run?
Bank on typically around 2 hours, with a second clean extending that where the filter is badly blocked.
Around The Close, what does it come to?
Beginning from £299, with a charge for coming out that takes in the scan and advice on what to do next. Quoting is done by phone, since what you drive and where you live both move the figure.
Have I got to be there?
The motor wants a space for two hours or so. Nobody expects you to be in it. The regeneration can be done as a supervised drive if you would prefer to ride along.
Can someone get to The Close soon?
It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is currently in the diary. One call to 0303 330 1830 and you will know what the SP area has free.
The filter — does it come off the vehicle?
It is done where it is, on the call-out service. And neither does taking a filter off nor fitting one back on is work we do.
Suppose the light reappears?
Aftercare comes inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer returning to The Close.
