- Worth a shot before you ring anything: amber light, vehicle driving fine, just one even run, no charge.
- Once the car is in limp mode, driving will not reach it. The window has gone.
- Get it checked rather than using it — diesel in the interior, or smoke on hard acceleration, has gone beyond the long-run stage.
Before the light, what the motor was telling you
Late news, the light. The symptoms generally mount for weeks before it appears:
- power tailing off, particularly climbing uphill
- you notice the revs never reach where they once went
- the fuel economy is worse
- without a word, the stop/start bows out
- the cabin reeking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
By itself, none of that is proof. It is a fair assumption the filter is loaded once the light is on as well.
The reason diesel particulate filters choke around Teavarran
For a DPF, the least kind driving is the sort you meet around an area such as Teavarran. Run through a typical week: the local primary school and back, A833 at a standstill before half nine, a five-minute run to Co-op Food, a dash to Beauly. None of it there runs long enough or runs hot enough to complete a regeneration. The soot builds up rather than clearing.

DPF renewal is what people type in, but no part is swapped: the filter you already own is treated where it sits and sent back into service. Nor is having it cut out a fix, since the MOT then fails and driving becomes illegal. Two more things worth bearing in mind.
