Tavistock, Devon: Mobile DPF Cleaning
The vehicle stays in place — on-site DPF cleaning goes to it. The technician pulls up at your place in Tavistock and starts. The diesel particulate filter is treated on the car, a DPF regeneration runs after it, and you keep the filter you started with.
Nobody leaves until the number is fixed on the phone. The visit lasts typically around 2 hours and the clean starts from £299.
The light is already on and the vehicle is short of power — that is how we normally come across people, and roughly what this page is about.
DPF light on? What happens next
Not the filter, always. First thing to say. A scan comes before the work, because that same dash light has plenty of possible faults behind it.
How the car is driven in the meantime counts too.
- Worth a go before you ring anything: amber light, motor driving normally, just one steady run, no outlay.
- That window has gone once the vehicle has slipped into limp mode. A drive will not help now.
- Diesel smell in the cabin, or black smoke under hard acceleration — stop arranging long drives and get it checked.
What the motor has been showing you
Symptoms have normally been mounting for a while before the light even shows. Late news, in other words:
- power falling off, especially climbing uphill
- the revs no longer climb the way they used to
- worse fuel economy
- stop/start without a word bowing out
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under hard acceleration
None of that is proof by itself. Next to the light beside them, the filter is a fair bet.
Why diesel particulate filters choke round Tavistock
For a DPF, the worst driving is the type you meet across a riverside town such as Tavistock. Think about a normal week: St Rumon's Church of England (VC) Infants School and home, West Street at a standstill before half nine, a five-minute run to Co-op Food, a hop to Gunnislake. Nothing there runs long enough or is hot enough to see through a regeneration. The soot builds up rather than burning away.
Where you sit does not help either. The M5 is under 50 miles from Tavistock and Plymouth is under 15 miles away, so unless something pulls you out that way routinely, entire weeks go by without the long steady run that might empty the filter alone.
DPF regeneration, and the point limp mode stops it
Limp mode is the car protecting itself. Pulling power is held down, the revs will not pull, and the regeneration the filter needs can no longer happen — which is the whole difficulty, because a long drive works by setting off that regeneration.
Good advice, that motorway run — until the point it is not. Once the motor is in limp mode you are the far side of that point, and the filter requires a clean rather than driving.
The vehicle stays put for on-site DPF cleaning across Tavistock
Nothing comes off the motor. That surprises people. The DPF sits fitted where it is and the work goes on around it, on a drive, in a works car park, wherever it can stand for a few hours.
First a check. Real-time ECU data, the soot load as a percent and as a weight, the sensors, the glow plugs, the associated hardware — all of it taken before anything is started.
A cleaning fluid after that is fed in through the access point on that vehicle, expanding inside the filter to loosen soot and ash a regeneration on its own will never move. Sometimes a filter is blocked enough to need doing twice.
Then a regeneration, to drive off what the clean has loosened. If you are there, that is carried out as a monitored drive out of Tavistock; if not, statically where the car sits, with the live data read after.
Both sets of figures are sent by email, so the figures from either end are on record. The second scan is what proves the change, puts out the light and logs whatever is still outstanding.
What a DPF clean will not fix
One thing is what cleaning fixes — a filter blocked with soot and ash. It does nothing for:
- sensors, pressure, reporting a blockage that is not real
- an EGR valve stuck open
- a failure in the AdBlue system
- faulty glow plugs or injectors, so never a regeneration ever runs
- a turbo pushing oil through the filter
That is what the first scan is for. You are let know before all work starts, not after you have paid, should it turns out to be one of those.
Two things more worth noting. Getting the filter hollowed out is not a solution — a vehicle without a functioning DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes searched for as DPF renewal: nothing is exchanged, your existing filter is cleared in place and put back into use.
What DPF cleaning comes to in Tavistock
Treatment begins from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it pays for the call-out, the booking, the diagnostics and the advice.
Naming a flat rate would not be honest. We fix it over phone, once the vehicle and its probable needs are known. What you run and where you are both change it: Tavistock itself, across at Whitchurch, or farther out across the PL postcode area.
Where the scan says treatment will not help, you are not charged for treatment. You even so pay that charge: someone travelled, did the check and gave you the advice.
The job carries a 30-day warranty covering aftercare, including an engineer travelling back out to Tavistock if the light returns inside that time.
Great service, Dave the the guy he fixed my car was very friendly and helpful. D P F fixer highly recommended company, thank you.
Fast, efficient and friendly service. Not cheap, but a lot cheaper than the alternative of fitting a new DPF! Thanks.
Had a clean. Didn't fix problem. Came back out. Still didn't fix the problem. Wast of time and £400.
What we clean, and how far we reach around Tavistock
Whatever it is — private car, light van, light commercial, HGV, plant, construction machinery, farm vehicle — the one mobile service holds, and the filter never quits it.
The same trip that has our engineers on West Street most weeks covers Tavistock, Whitchurch, Grenofen and the villages beyond Lamerton. Coverage runs UK-wide, so further out across Devon is nonetheless worth a call, and what settles between today and tomorrow is the calendar rather than the distance.

What Tavistock drivers want to know about DPF cleaning
- Will a long drive shift it?
- If you get it early, and the motor is not in limp mode, sometimes. It wants a long run at motorway speed, not five minutes or so to Co-op Food and back.
- About how long does it run?
- Count on typically around 2 hours, with a second clean adding to that where the filter is heavily clogged.
- How much does it cost around Tavistock?
- Beginning from £299, with a charge for the call-out that pays for the check and advice on what to do next. Pricing is done by phone, since what you drive and where you sit both move the figure.
- Have I got to be present?
- You need not stand with it — the car simply needs space to wait for a couple of hours. If you would rather come along, the regeneration can be carried out as a supervised drive instead.
- How soon can someone travel to Tavistock?
- It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is currently in the schedule. Ring 0303 330 1830 and we will let you what is open across the PL area.
- Does the filter leave the motor?
- Treated where it sits, on this service, so no. We never lift filters off or fit them back on, either way.
- What if the light comes back?
- An engineer comes back out to Tavistock — the 30-day warranty covers aftercare.
