Tal-y-coed, Monmouthshire: Mobile DPF Cleaning
With mobile DPF cleaning, we travel to the motor. An engineer turns up at your place across Tal-y-coed, cleans the diesel particulate filter while it is still on the car, performs a DPF regeneration, and you end up with the filter you started with.
You'll know a price by phone before anyone leaves, the clean opening from £299, and the visit taking typically around 2 hours.
Written for the state most owners are in: the light on already, the vehicle short for power, and the visit still to fix.
What to try when the DPF light shows
Not the DPF, necessarily. First thing to note. A scan happens before all cleaning, because that same panel light has several candidate faults behind it.
Second thing: how you run it between now and then makes a difference.
- Worth a try before you book anything: amber light, car driving fine, just one even run, no outlay.
- Motor already gone into limp mode — that window has shut. A drive will not shift it now.
- Stop planning long drives and get it checked if the car smells of diesel or there is black smoke when you accelerate.
What the motor has been warning you
The light is last news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have normally been mounting for a while:
- pulling uphill, the power falls off
- the revs no longer pull the way they always did
- worse fuel use
- a stop/start that has meekly packed in
- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gears
That is not conclusive alone. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is loaded.
Why diesel particulate filters clog round Tal-y-coed
Being a small village, Tal-y-coed throws up just the driving a DPF manages least well. None of it lasts long enough or gets hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration: the school run to the local primary school, B4233 crawling at the morning rush, a few minutes to Co-op Food, the run to Abergavenny. The soot banks up rather than burning off.
The map does not assist either. The M50 is under 15 miles from Tal-y-coed and Hereford is under 25 miles away, so unless something carries you out that way routinely, entire weeks pass without the long unbroken run that would scour the filter on its own.
Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration stops working
Limp mode is the vehicle defending itself. A sustained drive works by triggering a regeneration, and that is just what limp mode rules out: power held down, revs pinned, no regeneration available.
So the standard advice to run it up the motorway is sound advice, up until it stops being. In limp mode you are the far side of that line: treatment is what will work, not more miles.
Mobile DPF cleaning where the car stands across Tal-y-coed
Most drivers do not expect this detail: the filter remains. The job takes place with the DPF yet fixed to the car — on your drive, in a work car park, any place the car can wait for a couple of hours.
The ECU is interrogated first, reporting soot load by percent and by weight, along with a review of sensors, glow plugs and related hardware, so nothing is cleaned while another fault is still open.
After that comes the clean itself: cleaning fluid in through the car's own entry point, expanding inside the filter and freeing what a regeneration cannot. Sometimes a filter is blocked enough to take doing twice.
A regeneration is next, clearing what the clean has freed. Stay with the motor and it becomes a monitored drive out of Tal-y-coed. Leave it and the regeneration runs on the spot, with running data checked once it is done.
Both read-outs are sent by email, so the figures from either end are kept. The second diagnostic is what verifies the change, puts out the light and notes whatever is still open.
When a DPF clean is not the answer
Only one fault is cured by cleaning: the filter blocked with ash and soot. It does nothing for:
- sensors, temperature or pressure, flagging a restriction that is not real
- the EGR valve stuck open
- AdBlue system failures
- glow plugs or injectors stopping the regeneration completing in the first place
- the turbo pushing oil into the filter
Finding that out is the first diagnostic's purpose. If one of those is the fault, you hear about it up front rather than once the money has left for good.
Two more worth bearing in mind. Having the filter hollowed out is not a fix — a vehicle without a functioning DPF fails its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is exchanged, your own filter is treated in place and sent back into use.
Costs for DPF cleaning across Tal-y-coed
A call-out charge holds whatever happens, and covers the visit, the booking fee, the scan and the advice offered. The clean itself starts from £299.
Once we have what you own, and broadly what the filter will take, the figure gets fixed over phone. A single price for all would not be straight. Two separate things change it: what you own, and where you are — Tal-y-coed itself, out at Llantilio Crossenny, or otherwise out in the NP postcode area.
If the diagnostic writes a clean out, there is not a penny to pay for it. What nonetheless stands is the call-out charge, since the visit happened, the diagnostic was done and the advice was offered.
Aftercare is included by a 30-day warranty: should the light reappear within it, an engineer comes back to Tal-y-coed.
DPF Fixer booked an engineer out within 24hrs and arrived on time, Andras was very professional, polite and most importantly cleaned my vans DPF thoroughly and got me back on the road with good aftercare advice. Will certainly use them again in the future.
Nat arrived on time, super friendly and quickly reassured me that it was a blocked filter. Worked his magic, saved me from having to cancel work commitments. Highly recommend.
Mechanic who did the dpf cleaning was really good at his job, explained everything he was doing and gave me some pointers on keeping the dpf cleaner for longer. It is pricey but cheaper than replacing the dpf.
Where we travel around Tal-y-coed, and what we clean
The one mobile service covers cars, vans and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, construction and plant machinery and agricultural vehicles, and on every one the filter is treated on the vehicle rather than carried anywhere.
Most weeks there is usually someone on B4233, so Tal-y-coed rarely means a detour, and Llantilio Crossenny, Llanfaenor and the villages past Llanvapley come with it. Further out around Monmouthshire is even so worth ringing about — coverage is UK-wide, and it is the diary rather than the distance that decides between this day and the next.

Things Tal-y-coed drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Will a long drive sort it?
- Early enough, and with the motor out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. That requires motorway speed for a steady spell, rather than a short trip to Co-op Food.
- Roughly how long does it run?
- Expect typically around 2 hours — heavily blocked filters sometimes take a second pass, which extends it.
- What does it come to across Tal-y-coed?
- It opens from £299, plus the call-out charge taking in the visit, the diagnostic and the advice. Both the vehicle and where you are change it, which is why quoting happens by phone.
- Have I need to be there?
- The car wants a spot for two hours or so. You need not be in it. The regeneration can be done as a monitored drive if you would prefer to come along.
- Travelling to Tal-y-coed — how soon?
- Depending on the diary, often same-day or next-day is typical. Ring 0303 330 1830 and you will hear what is available across the NP area.
- Will the filter be lifted off?
- Treated where it is, on this service, so no. We will not take filters off or bolt them back on, whichever way.
- And if the light returns?
- Aftercare sits inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer returning to Tal-y-coed.
