Mobile DPF Cleaning serving Tain-Ion, Gwynedd
The car stays put — mobile DPF cleaning goes to it. An engineer arrives at your place across Tain-Ion, cleans the diesel particulate filter while it is fitted to the vehicle, runs a DPF regeneration, and you end up with the filter you arrived with.
You'll be given a number by phone before anyone goes, the clean starting from £299, and the visit running typically around 2 hours.
Most drivers find us with the light on already, and the motor down on power. That is exactly what this page is written for.
The DPF light is on. What next?
First thing: it is not always the filter. Several faults put the identical light on the same dash, which is why a visit begins with a scan rather than with treatment.
The use you manage in the meantime tells. That is the next thing.
- Worth a shot before you call anything: amber light, motor driving normally, just one steady run, no cost.
- Car already gone into limp mode — that window has shut. A drive will not reach it now.
- Stop planning long drives and get it checked if the cabin stinks of diesel or there is black smoke when you pull away.
Signs the car has been giving you
The light is late news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have normally been growing for a while:
- power tailing off, particularly pulling uphill
- you find the revs stop short of where they used to go
- fuel use going worse
- a stop/start that has silently given up
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under acceleration
On its own, none of that is evidence. Next to the light, it is a fair bet the filter is loaded.
Clogged diesel particulate filters near Tain-Ion, and the why
For a DPF, the worst driving is the sort you get around a rural hamlet such as Tain-Ion. Run through a normal week: the local primary school and back, A499 at a standstill before nine, a five-minute run to Cooperative, a hop to Criccieth. None of it there lasts long enough or gets hot enough to see through a regeneration. What should clear stays put.
Neither is a long way from Tain-Ion: over 50 miles to the Moreton Spur, under 25 miles to Bangor. Neither is on the way to much most weeks, though, so the journey that would clear a filter hardly ever happens.
Why limp mode prevents a DPF regeneration
It is self-protection: that is all limp mode means. With pulling power capped and the revs pinned, the regeneration the filter requires can never complete at all. That tells, because setting off one is exactly what a sustained run does.
So the common advice to run it up the motorway is sound advice, up until it is not. The filter wants cleaning rather than road work once the vehicle has gone into limp mode.
Call-out DPF cleaning where the car stands round Tain-Ion
On your driveway, in a work car park, anywhere the car can sit for a while: the job takes place with the filter even now fitted on, which is the detail most drivers do not anticipate.
Nothing is started until other faults are cleared. That requires a diagnostic first: running data off the ECU, soot load by proportion and by actual weight, and a look over of the sensor readings, glow plugs and connected parts.
Soot and ash that a regeneration on its own will never budge are lifted after that, by a solution passed through the access port on that vehicle, which opens out inside the filter. Heavily clogged filters sometimes take a second pass.
Next, a regeneration burns off everything the clean lifted. If you are there, that is carried out as a monitored drive out of Tain-Ion; if not, statically where the car waits, with the real-time data read after.
Both sets of figures go over by email, so the figures from either end are on record. The second diagnostic is what verifies the change, resets the light and logs whatever is still outstanding.
The failures a DPF clean cannot cure
Only one fault is cured by cleaning: the filter blocked with ash and soot. It does nothing for:
- a temperature or pressure sensor flagging a block that is not there
- an EGR valve stuck open
- an AdBlue system failure
- worn glow plugs or injectors, so not one regeneration ever starts
- oil coming through the filter from a failing turbo
Finding that out is the first scan's job. When it is found to be one of those, you are told before any work starts rather than after you have handed over a penny.
Cutting the filter out is not a remedy: without a serviceable DPF a vehicle cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is against the law. DPF renewal is the phrase people look up, though nothing is swapped — your own filter is cleaned in place and returned into use. Two more worth noting.
DPF cleaning prices around Tain-Ion
Cleaning opens from £299, with the call-out charge on top of that for every visit — it takes in the call-out, the booking, the scans and the advice.
Once we have what you drive, and broadly what the filter will want, the figure gets agreed over phone. A single price for all would not be honest. Two things change it: what you drive, and where you are — Tain-Ion itself, over at Pontllyfni, or farther out in the LL postcode area.
Where the diagnostic says cleaning will not work, you are not billed for cleaning. What still stands is the call-out charge, since the visit happened, the scan was run and the advice was passed on.
If the light reappears inside that time, an engineer travels back out to Tain-Ion — the job includes a 30-day warranty covering aftercare.
Really pleased with service. They communicated exceptionally well & Dave really pulled out all the stops to keep me on the road Explaining everything he did Will definitely recommend to anyone who is in the same situation. Thank you.

The vehicles we clean and the area we cover round Tain-Ion
The filter is treated on the vehicle on all of them: cars and estates, panel vans and light commercials, heavy goods vehicles, plant and construction machinery, agricultural vehicles. Nothing is moved anywhere.
Week in week out there is usually someone on A499, so Tain-Ion hardly ever means a special trip, and Pontllyfni, Clynnog Fawr and the places past Aberdesach come with it. It is the calendar, not the distance, that picks whether it is this day or the next, and coverage runs UK-wide — so ring even from further out across Gwynedd.
Tain-Ion itself

Tain-Ion is located approximately 16 miles from Bangor, the nearest city.
Things Tain-Ion drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Will a long drive shift it?
- Early enough, and with the motor out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. It takes a steady run at motorway speed, not fifteen minutes or so to Cooperative and back.
- Roughly how long does it last?
- It is typically around 2 hours. A heavily clogged filter can take a second clean, which lengthens that.
- The cost across Tain-Ion — what is it?
- The call-out charge covers the visit, the diagnostic and the advice; treatment itself begins from £299. We price on the phone, because the vehicle and your address both change the number.
- Do I have to be there?
- Somewhere for the vehicle to wait, for a couple of hours, is all that is required. Not you. The regeneration can be carried out as a watched drive if you would rather be there.
- Can someone come to Tain-Ion soon?
- Depending on the schedule, often same-day or next-day is typical. Call 0303 330 1830 and you will learn what is free across the LL area.
- Will the filter be removed?
- On the call-out service, no: the filter is treated in place. And neither does lifting a filter off nor fitting one back on is work we do.
- And if the light comes back?
- The 30-day warranty includes aftercare, including an engineer coming back to Tain-Ion.
