The DPF is not always what is to blame, and that comes first. That light can follow a number of faults, not only one, so the visit starts with a scan and not with a clean.

- Amber light, motor yet driving as normal — a long constant run can yet sort it on its own. Costs zero, and worth trying before you book anything.
- That window has closed once the car has fallen into limp mode. A drive will not do it now.
- A diesel smell in there, or black smoke under hard acceleration, is the moment to stop booking long drives and book it in.
What the motor has been warning you
Belated news, the light. The symptoms tend to grow for weeks before it arrives:
- less power, above all pulling uphill
- revs that will not pull the way they always did
- consumption that is worse than it was
- the stop/start silently packing in
- a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under hard acceleration
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not evidence. It is a fair assumption the filter is loaded once the light is on as well.

The day-to-day driving that goes with a rural hamlet like Swancote is the poorest type for a DPF. None of it lasts long enough or is hot enough for the filter to see through a regeneration: the school run to St. Mary's Bluecoat Church of England Primary School, A454 crawling at half eight, a few minutes to Co-op Food, the hop to Cosford. Two more worth bearing in mind. Leaving the filter gutted is not a fix — a vehicle without a working DPF cannot pass its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is swapped, your original filter is treated in place and put back into use.
