First thing: it is not automatically the DPF. That light can come from several faults, not just one, so the visit begins with a diagnostic and not with cleaning.
The motoring you do in the meantime counts. That is the second thing.
- A long constant run may even now be enough, provided the light is amber and the vehicle drives normally. Costs zero, so attempt that before calling.
- Car already gone into limp mode — that window has shut. A drive will not reach it now.
- Stop planning long drives and get it looked at if the cabin stinks of diesel or there is black smoke when you press on.
Signs the motor has been sending you
Late news, the light. The symptoms generally build for a while before it appears:
- power falling off, particularly going uphill
- the revs no longer climb the way they once did
- fuel economy getting worse
- without a word, the stop/start packs in
- the car reeking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
On its own, none of that is evidence. It is a fair bet the filter is full once the light is there too.

For a DPF, the least kind driving is the type you get in an area such as Strathtummel.
