Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway: Mobile DPF Cleaning
With on-site DPF cleaning, we drive out to the vehicle. The fitter arrives at your door across Stranraer and gets to work. The diesel particulate filter is cleared on the vehicle, a DPF regeneration follows, and you end up with the filter you started with.
Nobody sets off until the figure is agreed by the phone. The visit takes typically around 2 hours and the clean opens from £299.
Written for the situation most owners are in: the light already on, the vehicle short for power, and the job still to book.
Your DPF light is showing — what now?
The unit is not necessarily what is wrong, and that leads. A clean is not where a visit starts. A check is — plenty of faults show up as the same signal.
It counts what you do with the vehicle between now and the booking.
- A long steady run may still manage it, provided the light is amber and the motor goes normally. Costs nothing at all, so attempt that before calling.
- Vehicle already fallen into limp mode — that window has shut. A drive will not touch it now.
- Diesel smell in the cabin, or black smoke under acceleration — stop planning long drives and get it seen to.
What the vehicle has been showing you
By the time the light shows, things have usually been deteriorating for some time. It is late news:
- power falling off, above all going uphill
- revs that will not climb the way they once did
- economy that is worse than it was
- a stop/start that has meekly given up
- the interior stinking of diesel, or smoke when you press on
Any one of those, taken singly, is not evidence. It is a fair guess the filter is loaded once the light is on as well.
Blocked diesel particulate filters round Stranraer, and the why
Being a coastal town, Stranraer generates just the driving a DPF copes with the poorest. A regeneration takes long enough and heat, and sees none: not on the school run to the local primary school, not on Sun Street at the morning rush, not on ten minutes to Tesco, and not on the run to the nearest station. The unburnt soot banks up rather than burning off.
Unless you have a routine reason to get out to the M77, over 50 miles from Stranraer, or over to Belfast under 50 miles away, weeks go by without a long unbroken drive. Geography is against you.
The moment a DPF regeneration can no longer happen
It is self-preservation: that is all limp mode means. Power is capped, the revs will not rise, and the regeneration the filter requires can never happen — which is the entire catch, because a sustained drive works by starting that regeneration.
So the standard advice to take it up the motorway is sound advice, up until it stops being. The filter requires treatment rather than driving once the motor has gone into limp mode.
Where the motor stands is where the DPF is done in Stranraer
Nothing comes off the motor. That catches out people. The DPF remains bolted where it is and the work is done around it, on a driveway, in a works car park, wherever it can stand for a couple of hours.
Nothing is started until other faults are eliminated. That requires a scan first: live data off the ECU, soot load by proportion and by actual weight, and a review of the sensors, glow plugs and related parts.
A cleaning fluid then is injected through the entry point on that car, spreading inside the filter to lift soot and ash a regeneration on its own will never shift. Sometimes a filter is loaded enough to need doing twice.
Then a regeneration, to drive off what the clean has loosened. If you are there, that is carried out as a monitored drive out of Stranraer; if not, in place where the vehicle stands, with the running data checked once done.
A second check proves the change, puts out the warning light and notes anything still open. Both reports are emailed, so you keep the before and after figures on record.
When a DPF clean is not the solution
One thing is what treatment cures — a filter choked with soot and ash. It does no good for:
- sensors, pressure, flagging a blockage that is not real
- EGR valves that hang open
- an AdBlue system failure
- injectors or glow plugs that block a regeneration starting in the first place
- oil working through the filter from a faulty turbo
The first check is there for just that. Where one of those is the fault, you find out about it at the outset rather than once the money has changed hands already.
Gutting the filter out is not a solution: without a working DPF a vehicle cannot pass its MOT, and driving it is an offence. DPF renewal is the phrase people search for, though nothing is swapped — your existing filter is cleared in place and put back into use. Two more worth noting.
The price of DPF cleaning around Stranraer
The treatment begins from £299. A call-out charge applies to every visit, and covers the call-out itself, the booking, the diagnostic and the advice that comes with it.
Naming a flat rate would not be straight. We fix it by phone, once the car and its likely needs are established. What you run and where you are both change it: Stranraer itself, out at Stranraer Town, or further out in the DG postcode area.
Treatment that will not help is not a clean you pay for, and the check is what says so. You still pay that charge: someone came out, did the scan and passed on you the advice.
A 30-day warranty covers aftercare on the job, and that includes an engineer coming back out to Stranraer if the light returns inside the window.
At the moment 5 stars had my car done 3 days ago so far so good Liam the mechanic was very professional and polite only took 2 hrs max he gave me maintenance tips leaflet which is useful ill see what the next few weeks bring.

Where we get to around Stranraer, and what we clean
The filter is treated on the vehicle on all of them: cars and estates, vans of any size and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, construction and plant machinery, farm vehicles. Nothing is moved anywhere.
The same trip that has our engineers on Sun Street most weeks covers Stranraer, Stranraer Town, Sheuchan Parks and the spots beyond Lochans. Ring anyway from further out around Dumfries and Galloway. Coverage reaches UK-wide, and the slot you get depends on the diary rather than how far away you are.

Things Stranraer drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Will a long drive sort it?
- Sometimes, if you catch it in time and the car has not dropped into limp mode. A steady run at motorway speed is what it wants — not ten minutes flat to Tesco and back.
- The visit runs how long?
- Expect typically around 2 hours — heavily blocked filters sometimes need a second pass, which adds to it.
- In Stranraer, what does it cost?
- The call-out charge takes in the visit, the check and the advice; the clean itself starts from £299. The vehicle and your address both shift the number, so we settle it on the phone.
- Must I be present in person?
- No. The vehicle needs somewhere to stand for a couple of hours; nobody expects you to stand with it. The regeneration can be done as a supervised drive if you would prefer to ride along.
- Getting to Stranraer — how soon?
- It is often same-day or next-day, depending on what is already in the schedule. Call 0303 330 1830 and you will learn what is free across the DG area.
- Is the filter lifted off the motor?
- Not on the call-out service — it is treated where it stands. That job — a filter off, a filter back on — is not a job we do.
- What if the light comes back?
- Covered by the 30-day warranty: aftercare, and an engineer travelling back to Stranraer.
