The motor has been showing you already
By the time the light shows, things have generally been slipping for weeks. It is last news:
- tailing off on power, particularly uphill
- an engine whose revs will not rise like they did
- worse fuel economy
- stop/start quietly bowing out
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under the throttle
Any one of those, taken singly, is not conclusive. The light with them indicates a loaded filter.
Why diesel particulate filters choke around Steel Heath
