Steart, Somerset: Mobile DPF Cleaning

The car remains in place — call-out DPF cleaning travels to it. Your vehicle is not taken off and the filter does not budge. A fitter arrives at your door across Steart, treats the diesel particulate filter fitted to the car and runs a DPF regeneration.

Nobody leaves until the number is fixed by the phone. The visit runs typically around 2 hours and the clean opens from £299.

If the light is on already and the motor is low on power, this page is for you. That is how most people get to us.

Your DPF light is lit — what next?

It may not be the DPF at all. That is the main thing. A scan goes before the work, because that same panel light has plenty of possible faults behind it.

How the motor is handled in the meantime matters too.

  • Vehicle yet driving fine on an amber light — try a long steady run first. It costs zero and frequently clears the filter without help.
  • A drive will not shift it now — limp mode means that window has already closed.
  • Diesel smell in the interior, or black smoke under acceleration — stop planning long drives and get it checked.

What the motor has been showing you

The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have normally been building for a while:

  • falling off on power, especially uphill
  • revs that will not climb the way they always did
  • consumption that is worse than it was
  • the stop/start quietly packing in
  • a diesel smell in the interior, or smoke under hard acceleration

None of that is proof by itself. The light beside them indicates a loaded filter.

The reason diesel particulate filters choke around Steart

The driving that comes with a rural hamlet like Steart is the least kind kind for a DPF. Look at an ordinary week: Otterhampton Primary School and back, Stert Drove at a crawl before half nine, a quick trip to Lidl, a hop to Highbridge & Burnham. None of it there goes on long enough or runs hot enough to see through a regeneration. The soot load collects rather than clearing.

Neither is distant from Steart: under 5 miles to the M5, under 25 miles to Wells. Neither is on the way to anywhere most weeks, though, so the drive that would scour a filter never happens.

Why limp mode prevents a DPF regeneration

The motor is looking after itself, which is what limp mode means. A sustained drive works by starting a regeneration, and that is just what limp mode prevents: power limited, revs pinned, no regeneration on offer.

Sensible advice, that motorway run — up until the day it is not. In limp mode you are the far side of that line: a clean is what will help, not more driving.

A clogged DPF treated in Steart, Somerset

DPF cleaning at the car across Steart

Nothing comes off the car. That throws people. The DPF remains bolted where it is and the work happens around it, on a forecourt, in a works car park, any place it can stand for two hours or so.

A scan happens first — running data off the ECU, soot load by proportion and by actual weight, and a look over of the sensor readings, glow plugs and connected components, so other faults are ruled out before any of it is touched.

Then the clean. A cleaning solution goes in through the access port on that motor and opens out inside the filter, loosening the soot and ash a regeneration alone will never shift. A second pass is sometimes needed on heavily clogged filters.

Then a regeneration, to burn off what the clean has freed. Either it goes as a monitored drive out of Steart, with you present, or it goes where the car sits and the running data is checked after.

A second check proves the change, resets the warning light and notes anything still open. Both read-outs are emailed over, so you end up with the before and after figures to hand.

Where a clean is not the fix

Treatment answers one thing: a filter choked with soot and ash. It does little for:

  • pressure sensors flagging a block that is not there
  • an EGR valve jammed open
  • AdBlue system failures
  • a regeneration that hardly ever starts, because of glow plugs or injectors
  • oil passing through the filter from a failing turbo

Which is why the scan happens first. You are told before any work starts, not after you have handed over, should it turns out to be one of those.

Cutting the filter out is not a solution: without a working DPF a vehicle will fail its MOT, and driving it is against the law. DPF renewal is the term people type in, though nothing is exchanged — your existing filter is treated in place and put back into use. Two more worth bearing in mind.

What DPF cleaning runs to in Steart

Every visit carries a call-out charge — travelling to you, setting up the booking, doing the diagnostic and passing on the advice. The clean itself starts from £299.

No single flat rate would be honest, so the number is agreed by the phone once we are told the vehicle and what the filter is apt to need. The vehicle changes it, and so does the address — Steart, Stretcholt, or a spot farther out in the TA postcode area.

Cleaning that will not do it is not a clean you pay for, and the check is what says so. What even so applies is the call-out charge, since the visit took place, the check was carried out and the advice was given.

Aftercare is taken in by a 30-day warranty: should the light come back within it, an engineer heads back to Steart.

Daz was a polite friendly engineer explained the process clearly. carried out the work confidently, so happy with the job so far.

From my desperate phonecall to Zolton showing up was about 1 hour!! The service was quick, friendly and efficient. Zolton clearly has a passion for cars which shone through. He was a really nice guy and explained each step well. The result is a success.

Mark H.

Mechanic who did the dpf cleaning was really good at his job, explained everything he was doing and gave me some pointers on keeping the dpf cleaner for longer. It is pricey but cheaper than replacing the dpf.

Where we get to around Steart, and what we clean

Cars, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, plant machinery, agricultural machinery — the one mobile service across all of them, and on all of them the filter is cleaned in place rather than carried anywhere.

Week in week out there is by then someone on Stert Drove, so Steart rarely means a journey of its own, and Stretcholt, Pawlett Hill and the villages past Stockland Bristol are on the way. Coverage is UK-wide, so farther out through Somerset is still worth a ring, and what decides between today and tomorrow is the diary rather than the distance.

Steart itself

Steart is a small coastal hamlet in Somerset, situated near the mouth of the River Parrett and close to the villages of Stretcholt and Otterhampton. Steart lies at a low elevation of around 7 metres, making it a flat and low-lying area. Steart is characterised by its detached housing and quiet, rural atmosphere, with the nearest city being Wells, located approximately 17 miles away.

Usual questions on DPF cleaning around Steart

Can I simply take it for a long drive?
It might, provided you get it early enough and limp mode has not set in. Ten minutes to Lidl and back will not be enough; motorway speed, held for some time, will.
The visit runs how long?
Allow typically around 2 hours — badly loaded filters sometimes need a second pass, which extends it.
What does it cost across Steart?
Cleaning begins from £299, and the call-out charge on top takes in the visit, the scan and the advice. The vehicle and your address both change the price, so we quote on the phone.
Is it necessary for me to be around?
You do not need to stand with it — the car just requires a spot to sit for a couple of hours. The regeneration can be done as a watched drive if you would rather be there.
Can someone get to Steart soon?
You are offered often same-day or next-day, though it depends what is already in the schedule. Call 0303 330 1830 and we will tell you what is open across the TA area.
Is the filter removed from the motor?
It is treated where it sits, on the mobile service. Getting a filter off or bolting one back on count as anything work we do in either direction.
What if the light comes back?
Aftercare sits inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer coming back to Steart.
