The vehicle has been showing you already
Belated news, the light. The symptoms usually mount for some time before it appears:
- power dropping away, particularly climbing uphill
- an engine whose revs will not rise as before
- worse fuel economy
- quietly, the stop/start bows out
- the car reeking of diesel, or smoke when you accelerate
By itself, none of that is proof. Next to the light, it is a fair bet the filter is loaded.
Choked diesel particulate filters round Starling, and the reason
The motoring that belongs to a small village like Starling is the least kind type for a DPF. A regeneration needs long enough and heat, and sees neither: not on the school run to Lowercroft Primary School, not on Ainsworth Road at half eight, not on five minutes to Co-op Food, and not on the run to Hall i' th' Wood. Limp mode is the motor protecting itself. The entire problem is that a long drive works by triggering a regeneration, and once in limp mode the revs will not climb and power is limited.

And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is exchanged, your own filter is cleaned in place and sent back into use.
