What the car has been telling you
By the time the light appears, things have normally been slipping for weeks. It is belated news:
- tailing off on power, particularly uphill
- revs that will not rise the way they used to
- worse fuel use
- stop/start silently bowing out
- smoke under hard acceleration, or a diesel smell inside
None of that is evidence alone. The light with them points at a blocked filter.

Two things more worth knowing. Having the filter hollowed out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a functioning DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is exchanged, your original filter is cleared in place and sent back into use.
