St Stephen, Cornwall: Mobile DPF Cleaning
Treating the DPF happens at the car, not at a workshop. Your motor isn't taken anywhere and the filter doesn't come off. An engineer comes at your door across St Stephen, clears the diesel particulate filter on the motor and runs a DPF regeneration.
Nobody travels until the price is agreed on the phone. The visit runs typically around 2 hours and the clean begins from £299.
Most drivers find us with the light showing, and the car short of power. That is the situation this page is meant for.
Your DPF light is showing — what then?
First thing: it is not always the DPF. A check happens before any work, because that same panel light has a number of candidate faults behind it.
How the vehicle is driven in the meantime matters too.
- Amber light, motor still driving fine — a long even run can even now clear it alone. Costs nothing at all, and worth trying before you ring anything.
- That window has closed once the car has slipped into limp mode. Driving will not help now.
- Diesel smell in the interior, or black smoke under the throttle — stop arranging long drives and get it looked at.
What the motor has been showing you
By the time the light arrives, things have normally been going wrong for weeks. It is belated news:
- power dropping away, particularly going uphill
- an engine whose revs will not pull as before
- the fuel economy is poorer
- silently, the stop/start gives up
- a diesel smell in the car, or smoke under hard acceleration
None of that is evidence on its own. The light with them suggests a loaded filter.
What clogs diesel particulate filters near St Stephen
For a DPF, the least kind use is the sort you find across a village such as St Stephen. The school run to St Stephen Churchtown Academy, Gwindra Road at a crawl at half past eight, a few minutes to Co-op Food, the dash to St Columb Road — none of it runs long enough or is hot enough for the filter to finish a regeneration. Instead of clearing, the soot load builds up.
Except when you have a routine need to get out to the M5, over 50 miles from St Stephen, or across to Truro under 10 miles away, entire weeks go by without a long unbroken drive. Geography is no help.
The moment a DPF regeneration can no longer run
What limp mode means is the car defending itself. A long drive works by triggering a regeneration, and that is just what limp mode blocks: power limited, revs held down, no regeneration on offer.
So the standard advice to run it up the motorway is good advice, up until the day it is not. In limp mode you are the far side of that line: cleaning is what will help, not more miles.
On-site DPF cleaning where the motor stands in St Stephen
On your driveway, in a work car park, anywhere the car can stand for a few hours: the job is done with the filter even now fixed on, which is the bit most drivers do not anticipate.
A scan goes first — running data off the ECU, soot load by percent and by weight, and a check of the sensors, glow plugs and related parts, so other faults are cleared before any of it is started.
Then comes the clean itself: solution in through the vehicle's own access point, expanding inside the filter and freeing what a regeneration cannot. A second pass is sometimes required on heavily blocked filters.
Then a regeneration, to drive off what the clean has loosened. If you are there, that is carried out as a monitored drive out of St Stephen; if not, statically where the vehicle stands, with the real-time data read afterwards.
Both read-outs come through by email, so the figures from either end are recorded. The second scan is what confirms the change, puts out the light and logs whatever is still outstanding.
When a DPF clean is not the solution
A clean cures one thing: a filter clogged with soot and ash. It does nothing for:
- the wrong reading from a temperature or pressure sensor
- EGR valves that stick open
- an AdBlue system problem
- glow plugs or injectors blocking the regeneration starting in the first place
- a turbo passing oil through the filter
That is what the first check is for. If one of those turns out to be the fault, you learn of it at the outset rather than once the money has changed hands altogether.
Gutting the filter out is not a solution: without a working DPF a vehicle will fail its MOT, and driving it is an offence. DPF renewal is the wording people look up, though nothing is swapped — your existing filter is cleared in place and returned into use. Two more worth knowing.
What DPF cleaning comes to across St Stephen
The clean begins from £299. A call-out charge covers every visit, and covers the call-out itself, the booking, the check and the advice that comes with it.
Naming a flat rate would not be truthful. We agree it by phone, once the motor and its expected needs are known. The motor moves it, and so does the location — St Stephen, Treneague, or a spot farther out in the PL postcode area.
You are not charged for treatment that the check says will not work. Because the visit, the check and the advice have happened, the call-out charge even so applies.
A 30-day warranty covers aftercare on the work, and that includes an engineer heading back out to St Stephen if the light comes back inside the time.
Good Service, Person who repair my car was also nice, My car works fine now. No complaints. Definitely recommend to others.
Really good service. Everything explained clearly. Pointed out some other engine issues to check out which was very helpful. Expensive compared to other companies but with the 28 day warranty I felt happy to pay to get the best service. Couldn't fault the engineer he was excellent.
Prompt service from Liam who took 1 hour to discover the problem and advise accordingly, with no need to have a new DPF which was quoted at £1600 from Mazda. Weight off my mind, many thanks.
What we clean, and how far we travel near St Stephen
Whatever it is — car, van, light commercial, heavy goods vehicle, plant, construction machinery, farm vehicle — the same call-out service holds, and the filter never leaves it.
St Stephen is hardly ever a special trip: engineers are working Gwindra Road nearly every week, and the same run picks up Treneague, Carloggas and the spots out past Coombe. It is the calendar, not the distance, that settles whether it is this day or the next, and coverage extends UK-wide — so phone even from further out around Cornwall.

Things St Stephen drivers ask about DPF cleaning
- Will a long drive clear it?
- Quickly enough, and with the motor out of limp mode, yes — sometimes. It wants a sustained run at motorway speed, not ten minutes or so to Co-op Food and back.
- Does the visit run long?
- It is typically around 2 hours. A severely blocked filter can take a second clean, which adds to that.
- What does it cost across St Stephen?
- It begins from £299, plus the call-out charge taking in the visit, the diagnostic and the advice. Quoting is done by phone, since what you drive and where you are both shift the price.
- Is it essential for me to be there?
- No. The motor wants space to stand for a couple of hours; nobody expects you to stand with it. The regeneration can be done as a watched drive if you would prefer to be there.
- How soon can someone get to St Stephen?
- That comes down to the schedule, but it is often same-day or next-day. Call 0303 330 1830 and we will let you what is open across the PL area.
- Is the filter lifted off the vehicle?
- It is done where it is, on the on-site service. Nor does lifting a filter off nor fitting one back on is work we do.
- What if the light reappears?
- Aftercare falls inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer coming back to St Stephen.
