St Michaels, Devon: Mobile DPF Cleaning

Sorting the DPF is done at the car, not at a workshop. The fitter pulls up at your address over in St Michaels and starts. The diesel particulate filter is treated fitted to the motor, a DPF regeneration comes next, and you hold on to the filter you arrived with.

The visit takes typically around 2 hours, the clean opens from £299, and the number is settled on the phone before anyone leaves.

Most owners find us with the light on already, and the motor short of power. That is the position this page is aimed at.

Your DPF light is lit — what next?

The filter is not automatically what is to blame, and that comes first. A diagnostic happens before all treatment, because that same dashboard light has several possible faults behind it.

Second thing: how you handle it between now and then makes a difference.

  • A long constant run may still do it, provided the light is amber and the car goes as normal. Costs nothing at all, so have a go at that before calling.
  • Once the car is in limp mode, a long run will not reach it. The window has shut.
  • Get it seen to rather than using it — diesel in the cabin, or smoke on acceleration, has gone beyond the long-run stage.

What the motor has been warning you

The light is belated news. By the time it appears, the symptoms have normally been mounting for weeks:

  • falling off on power, above all uphill
  • you notice the revs stop short of where they used to go
  • the fuel economy is down
  • the stop/start without a word bowing out
  • diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gears

Alone, none of that is conclusive. The light with them indicates a blocked filter.

Why diesel particulate filters choke round St Michaels

For a DPF, the worst driving is the sort you find across a residential suburb such as St Michaels. Look at a typical week: St Michael's Church of England Academy and home again, Corsham Road at a crawl before nine, a short hop to Co-op Food, a dash to Paignton. Not much there goes on long enough or is hot enough to finish a regeneration. The soot that should burn off collects instead.

Neither is distant from St Michaels: under 25 miles to the M5, under 25 miles to Exeter. Neither is on the way to anywhere most weeks, though, so the run that would scour a filter hardly ever happens.

Limp mode, and when DPF regeneration stops

The car is looking after itself, which is what limp mode amounts to. Output is limited, the revs will not pull, and the regeneration the filter needs can not happen — which is the whole problem, because a sustained drive works by setting off that regeneration.

Running it up the motorway is the common advice, and it works as far as a point. The far side of that stage — limp mode — driving will not manage it, and the filter wants treatment.

Nothing comes off the motor. That throws people. The DPF stays bolted where it is and the work is done around it, on a driveway, in a works car park, any place it can wait for a couple of hours.

Nothing is cleaned until other faults are eliminated. That requires a check first: live data off the ECU, soot load by proportion and by weight, and a check of the sensor feeds, glow plugs and related hardware.

Soot and ash that a regeneration by itself will never budge are loosened after that, by a solution fed through the entry point on that vehicle, which opens out inside the filter. Heavily clogged filters sometimes require a second pass.

Next, a regeneration clears everything the clean lifted. That is a monitored drive out of St Michaels if you are there, or a static regeneration where the car waits, with the real-time data verified after.

Finally the diagnostic runs again — the change verified, the light cleared, anything still showing logged. Both sets of figures arrive with you by email, so the numbers are on record.

The failures a DPF clean cannot cure

A filter blocked with soot and ash is the one thing cleaning answers. It will not touch:

  • sensors, pressure or temperature, flagging a block that is not real
  • an EGR valve jammed open
  • AdBlue system failures
  • glow plugs or injectors preventing the regeneration starting at all
  • a turbo passing oil through the filter

That is what the first scan is for. You are warned before all work starts, not after you have settled up, should it turns out to be one of those.

A couple more worth knowing. Having the filter gutted is not a remedy — a vehicle without a functioning DPF fails its MOT and driving it is against the law. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your existing filter is cleaned in place and returned into use.

What DPF cleaning comes to around St Michaels

The clean begins from £299. A call-out charge is added to every visit, and takes in the call-out itself, the booking, the scan and the advice that comes with it.

Quoting a flat rate would not be truthful. We agree it over phone, once the motor and its likely needs are known. What you run and where you are both move it: St Michaels itself, out at Paignton, or further out within the TQ postcode area.

You are not charged for a clean that the scan says will not do it. The call-out charge nonetheless stands, because the visit, the check and the advice have happened.

A 30-day warranty takes in aftercare on the work, and that includes an engineer coming back out to St Michaels if the light comes back inside the period.

One mobile service spans cars, panel vans and light commercials, HGVs and lorries, plant and construction machinery and agricultural machinery, and on every one the filter is done in place rather than moved anywhere.

Frequent questions on DPF cleaning in St Michaels

Is a long drive enough by itself?
Sometimes, if you get it early and the vehicle has not fallen into limp mode. A sustained run at motorway speed is what it needs — not ten minutes or so to Co-op Food and back.
The visit takes how long?
Allow typically around 2 hours — badly clogged filters sometimes require a second pass, which adds to it.
The cost across St Michaels — what is it?
Opening from £299, with a charge for coming out that pays for the check and advice on what to do next. Quoting is done by phone, since what you own and where you are both shift the number.
Is it needed for me to be there?
A spot for the car to wait, for a couple of hours, is all that is required. Not you. Choosing to be there is no problem: the regeneration then goes out on the road, monitored.
How soon can someone get to St Michaels?
Depending on the diary, often same-day or next-day is typical. One phone call to 0303 330 1830 and you will learn what the TQ area has open.
The filter — does it come away from the motor?
On the on-site service, no: the filter is treated in place. We do not lift filters off or fit them back on, either way.
What if the light comes back?
Aftercare sits inside the 30-day warranty, and that includes an engineer coming back to St Michaels.
