Before the light, what the vehicle was telling you
The light is belated news. By the time it shows, the symptoms have normally been building for some time:
- less power, above all climbing uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb like they did
- economy that is worse than before
- a stop/start that has quietly packed in
- a diesel smell in the cabin, or smoke under acceleration
None of that is evidence by itself. It is a fair assumption the filter is loaded once the light is there too.
The reason diesel particulate filters block around St Martin
The driving that comes with a rural hamlet like St Martin is the least kind kind for a DPF. Look at a normal week: Looe Primary Academy and home, B3253 at a crawl before nine, a short hop to Co-op Food, a dash to Looe. Not much there runs long enough or is hot enough to complete a regeneration. The soot banks up rather than burning off.

The ECU is interrogated first, reporting soot load by proportion and by mass, along with a review of sensor feeds, glow plugs and associated hardware, so nothing is cleaned while another fault is still in play.
Soot and ash that a regeneration alone will never budge are lifted second, by a solution passed through the access point on that car, which opens out inside the filter. Where the filter is heavily blocked, plan on a second pass.

- sensors, pressure or temperature, flagging a blockage that is not real
- the EGR valve stuck open
- AdBlue system faults
- glow plugs or injectors blocking the regeneration running in the first place
- the turbo putting oil into the filter
The first scan is there for just that. When it proves to be one of those, you are warned before any work begins rather than after you have paid anything.
Two things more worth noting. Getting the filter cut out is not a remedy — a vehicle without a serviceable DPF fails its MOT and driving it is an offence. And cleaning is sometimes described as DPF renewal: nothing is replaced, your original filter is cleared in place and sent back into use.
