The motor has been telling you already
The light is belated news. By the time it arrives, the symptoms have generally been building for some time:
- climbing uphill, the power tails off
- you notice the revs stop short of where they used to go
- fuel economy getting worse
- the stop/start quietly bowing out
- the car smelling of diesel, or smoke when you pull away
Any one of those, taken by itself, is not conclusive. With the light alongside them, the filter is a fair guess.
The cause diesel particulate filters choke round St James
