What the motor has been warning you
Last news, the light. The symptoms generally mount for a while before it appears:
- power tailing off, above all climbing uphill
- an engine whose revs will not climb as before
- fuel use that is worse than it was

- diesel in the car, or smoke on the way up through the gearbox
None of that is proof alone. With the light, it is a fair bet the filter is loaded.
