Before the light, what the car was showing you
By the time the light shows, things have usually been slipping for some time. It is last news:
- less power, particularly pulling uphill
- revs that will not pull the way they always did
- fuel consumption getting worse
- a stop/start that has quietly packed in
- smoke under the throttle, or a diesel smell inside
By itself, none of that is proof. It is a fair guess the filter is loaded once the light is showing too.
The explanation diesel particulate filters block round Southery
For a DPF, the worst driving is the type you meet in a rural village such as Southery. Nothing is started until other faults are cleared. That involves a diagnostic first: real-time data off the ECU, soot load by percentage and by weight, and a check of the sensor readings, glow plugs and associated hardware.
Soot and ash that a regeneration by itself will never budge are lifted next, by a solution passed through the access port on that vehicle, which opens out inside the filter. Sometimes a filter is clogged enough to need doing twice.
Then a regeneration, to drive off what the clean has lifted. Come with the motor and it turns into a monitored drive out of Southery. Leave it and the regeneration runs on the spot, with live data read once it is done.

What a DPF clean will not touch
Only one fault is cured by cleaning: the filter choked with ash and soot. It does little for:
- sensors, temperature or pressure, flagging a block that is not real
- the EGR valve stuck open
- the AdBlue system going wrong

- turbo trouble, with oil getting into the filter
Finding that out is the first scan's whole job. Where one of those is the fault, you learn of it in advance rather than once the money has changed hands altogether.
A couple more worth bearing in mind. Leaving the filter cut out is not a solution — a vehicle without a functioning DPF will fail its MOT and driving it is illegal. And cleaning is sometimes looked up as DPF renewal: nothing is exchanged, your own filter is cleaned in place and put back into use.
